Understand Defining Attributes of Shapes
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Lesson objective: Explore the characteristics that define different shapes and the names of those shapes.
Students bring prior knowledge of naming shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size from (K.G.2). This prior knowledge is extended to defining and non-defining attributes as students determine what things are true for all triangles, all squares, etc. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is thinking attributes such as size, color, and orientation are what determine a shape.
The concept is developed through a sorting activity, which encourage students to consider common attributes and predict which shape can be added to a circle based on a defining attribute.
This work helps students deepen their understanding of numbers because shapes can be defined by number of sides, angles, and faces.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) as they use clear definitions with peers and define attributes and provide a viable argument reasoning why a shape lacks specific attributes.

Understanding Transformations
Unrestricted Use

Rating

This lesson unit is intended to help you assess how well students are able to:

Recognize and visualize transformations of 2D shapes.
Translate, reflect and rotate shapes, and combine these transformations.

It also aims to encourage discussion on some common misconceptions about transformations.
Introduction

The lesson unit is structured in the following way:

Before the lesson, students work individually on an assessment task that is designed to reveal their current understandings and difficulties. You then review their work, and create questions for students to consider in order to improve their solutions.
After a whole-class introduction, students work in small groups on a collaborative task.
In a whole-class discussion, students review the main mathematical concepts of the lesson.
Students return to their original task, and try to improve their own responses.

Use your Pep Band to create stories that engage young children

This was a fun project I did with my band to fill the few days between the Holiday Concert and the beginning of Christmas vacation.  It engaged my students by using the pep band songs they already knew and creating a story line.  It engaged the elementary students with the performance of our story.  I introduced the narrator and characters in a story which reinforced their learning of English and storytelling.
In a couple of days my students had come up with ideas of how to portray characters that came to search for a holiday spirit.  We rehearsed the songs while our characters figured out their own blocking.

The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) has been serving Wisconsin for over 125 years. Part of the Division of Extension at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, WGNHS provides objective scientific information about the geology, mineral resources, and water resources of Wisconsin. We conduct research, map Wisconsin’s geology, and share information through our publications and outreach.

WGNHS has been producing geologic maps, scientific reports, and more for over 125 years. Our publications catalog offers thousands of maps, reports, datasets, and other publications—all of which are available to view and download for free.

The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1897. It is the descendant of earlier state surveys in Wisconsin, which date back to 1854.

WGNHS, part of the Division of Extension at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is an interdisciplinary organization that conducts natural resources surveys and research to produce information used for decision-making, problem-solving, planning, management, development, and education. Survey is defined to include resource inventory as well as basic and applied research and analysis. WGNHS has no specific regulatory or enforcement responsibilities.

Mission of WGNHS:
Understanding the earth • Charting its history • Sustaining its resources
The Survey conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research.

We provide objective scientific information about the geology, water resources, and mineral resources of Wisconsin.

We collect, interpret, disseminate, and archive natural resource information.

We communicate the results of our activities through publications, technical talks, our website, social media, and responses to inquiries from the public.

These activities support informed decision making by government, industry, business, and individual residents of Wisconsin.

WHO RULES? THE DEMOCRACY CRISIS
Only Sharing Permitted
CC BY-NC-ND
Rating
0.0 stars

Students continue to explore the democracy journey, starting with people’s movements for civil liberties and civil rights during the 1950s to 1970s. Students are introduced to the Powell Memo of 1971, the business community’s response to this perceived attack on the American free enterprise, and then explore the landmark laws and social consequences of the resulting strategic legal campaign, organized by the Monied Power, to influence public opinion and, hence, political campaign outcomes. Students summarize the democracy journey, creating their own narrative of who rules.
Teachers can download the full set of lesson materials sets as zip files. Each set includes a teacher’s guide, PowerPoint slides, worksheets, and other materials.
