In this lesson, students will become entomologists by using the great outdoors to go on a bug hunt. Throughout the lesson, students will investigate the physical features of bugs. By comparing bugs and humans, students will create a model of a solution to a human problem by mimicking the anatomy of bugs.

This activity is a field investigation or bio-blitz where students are collecting as many different types of insects as they can. Back in the lab, they will record their findings, sort and classify the insects found. This will lead into a class discussion on biodiversity and the importance of insects and their benefits all living things.

Students conduct their own research to discover and understand the methods designed by engineers and used by scientists to analyze or validate the molecular structure of DNA, proteins and enzymes, as well as basic information about gel electrophoresis and DNA identification. In this computer-based activity, students investigate particular molecular imaging technologies, such as x-ray, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and create short PowerPoint presentations that address key points. The presentations include their own explanations of the difference between molecular imaging and gel electrophoresis.

This ITS ePrimer provides transportation professionals with fundamental concepts and practices related to ITS technologies. This resource can help practicing professionals and students better understand how ITS is integrated into the planning, design, deployment, and operations of surface transportation systems. The ePrimer is both a stand-alone reference document for the practitioner as well as a text for education and training programs.
Students are introduced to the concept of an environment and the interactions …
Students are introduced to the concept of an environment and the interactions within it through written and hands-on webbing activities. They also learn about environmental engineering careers and the roles of these engineers in our society.

This resource is an online interactive simulation of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington in the United States of America. This simulation has 3 key features which are research areas, instruments with their current readings, and infrastructures near and in the Pacific Ocean. The user can select a feature that they want to learn more about by selecting that feature and then the user can learn about various oceanic equipment used in that area as well as if the equipment is currently operational.

This seminar will explore the difficulties of getting agreement on global definitions of sustainability; in particularly building international support for efforts to combat climate change created by greenhouse gas emissions as well as other international resource management efforts. We will focus on possible changes in the way global environmental agreements are formulated and implemented, especially on ways of shifting from the current "pollution control†approach to combating climate change to a more comprehensive strategy for taking advantage of sustainable development opportunities.

This article by Coleman, McConnaughay, and Ackerly discusses how phenotypic variation (variation in observable traits) in plants is influenced by environment, genetics, and developmental stage. The authors stress that understanding the interplay of these factors is important for investigations that involve plant comparisons.

This set of warm-up activities uses the example of investigating the dinosaur extinction to introduce fundamental concepts regarding the nature and process of science--especially, debunking the myth of THE Scientific Method.
Designed as a freshmen seminar course, faculty from various School of Engineering …
Designed as a freshmen seminar course, faculty from various School of Engineering departments describe the research and educational opportunities specific to and offered by their departments. Background lectures by the 20.010J staff introduce students to the fundamental scientific basis for bioengineering. Specially produced videos provide additional background information that is supplemented with readings from newspaper and magazine articles. Bioengineering at MIT is represented by the diverse curricula offered by most Departments in the School of Engineering. This course samples the wide variety of bioengineering options for students who plan to major in one of the undergraduate Engineering degree programs. The beginning lectures describe the science basis for bioengineering with particular emphasis on molecular cell biology and systems biology. Bioengineering faculty will then describe the bioengineering options in a particular engineering course as well as the type of research conducted by faculty in the department.
