What do Prairie Chickens Need in Order to Survive Today's Prairie?

This middle school unit covering ecosystems, animal behavior and symbiosis was developed through the Storyline approach. Middle school students will be figuring out why prairie chickens have a very unique dance and understand the role cows play to help ensure the dance takes place. Using this approach, students engage in science concepts to help ensure the survival of the prairie chicken.

Students brainstorm ways that they use — and waste — natural resources. Also, they respond to some facts about population growth and how people use petroleum. Lastly, students consider the different ways that engineers interact with and use our natural resources. Also meet Dustin Madden, an Iñupiaq and assistant science teacher in the Anchorage, Alaska, school district, in this video profile produced by WGBH. Madden explains the importance of developing a strong background in science and math in order to help preserve and protect the environment. He also discusses how his cultural upbringing has influenced him, and how he tries to reach out to students who have grown up in rural Alaska.

This resource contains the documents used by students in our Global Sustainability cohort who participated in a bilingual action project with a community partner. The projects are designed to help students develop professional skills by reflecting on goals they want to achieve through participation in the project. The students complete an initial reflection, multiple check-ins throughout the year and an end of the year reflection. The students also create an impact report that is shared with their community partner.

PBJ Challenge

The students are challenged to develop a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a food manufacturer.  The students are to create a healthy sandwich as well as, the packaging.  The students are able to select from a variety of ingredients to create a healthy PBJ to meet the requirements presented to them in a letter from the manufacturer.  The students then have to create the packaging for their sandwich considering the packagings ability to keep the food fresh, protected and to catch the eye of the consumer all while keeping the overhead cost of the packaging in mind.  After the students complete their tasks they share their sandwiches in a taste test and their packages are put through a series of tests to see how they will hold up if they are dropped, slammed against the side of the delivery truck or have something dropped on top of them.  The students enjoy seeing how well their designs hold up to these tests.  The students are introduced to a number of the units that will be covered in the food science course including, sweeteners, fats, colors, preservatives, and flavors.

The PFAS Interactive Data Viewer is a mapping tool that incorporates datasets from several DNR programs to show locations throughout Wisconsin that have been impacted by PFAS.

Information included in the PFAS Interactive Data Viewer include locations with known PFAS contamination and whether clean up has been completed; results from testing municipal drinking water for PFAS; locations with PFAS-related fish and game consumption advisories; and waterbodies throughout Wisconsin sampled for PFAS during targeted or routine monitoring.

These data may not reflect current PFAS levels at specific locations.

Permaculture Design: Tools for Climate Resilience

Climate is also where we begin the design process in another tool referenced in the Permaculture design system. This is the Scale of Landscape Permanence, originated by P.A.Yeomans, the founder of Keyline™ Design. Yeomans asserts that the order of design is:

Climate
Landshape
Water Supply
Roads/Access
Trees
Structures
Subdivision Fences
Soil
This book is predominantly about climate, and the macro influences of climate and climate change on design. As we get through the topics of climate analogues and climate change forecasting, we will end up moving down this list to see the climate’s influence on specific design choices.

This is a combination of a worksheet and interactive activity for students to either be introduced to photosynthesis and cellular respiration, or it can be a review activity.  Students take 9 pieces of paper (for which they write the different parts of the chemical equation of photosynthesis/cellular respiration) to construct the equations for both processes.  This is to help them see that the processes are the "opposite" of each other.  While following along on the worksheet, students manipulate the pieces of paper according to the instructions and then answer questions on the worksheet.

Plant stem anatomy can be a challenge to teach and learn.  To make it relevant and more interesting the students created edible models of the plants vascular system.  The students used ingredients and food items that helped them understand the structure and function of the vascular system.  Once they constructed their model they labeled the parts and explained the function of each part.  The Botany Coloring book is used to provide the detailed diagrams and in depth explanation of the vascular system first and then the students create their edible model.
