From the task itself on the Webquest: "Now that our class has completed reading A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, you are going to embark on a journey to ensure that Scrooge does not revert back to his miserly ways. In order to ensure this, you will work both individually and together as a team. Many of the tasks will be completed online, but some involve other skills. Follow these steps and you will help keep Scrooge from ever becoming a misanthrope again!"

These activities include: A Scavenger Hunt that provides links to various sites that enable to students to develop a deeper understanding of Victorian England as the setting of the text; a Holiday Menu (exploring cultural aspects of the holiday); Apology Letters written as Scrooge to various characters); Symbolic Tokens (to enable Scrooge to remember his lessons); all compiled as a group 'gift', which I thought was a wonderful symbol of just exactly what learning is :)

Composing a Song With Others Using Google Flat

This lesson plan uses Google Flat to teach compostion and collaboration.
This site can be used to build a class song by everyone in the class contributing to the composition.  Each student can contribute to the song at the same time or can add notes at a later date.  The site is set up like a Google Doc. You can work with the person next to you or someone in a completely differerent location.

A computational camera attempts to digitally capture the essence of visual information by exploiting the synergistic combination of task-specific optics, illumination, sensors and processing. In this course we will study this emerging multi-disciplinary field at the intersection of signal processing, applied optics, computer graphics and vision, electronics, art, and online sharing through social networks. If novel cameras can be designed to sample light in radically new ways, then rich and useful forms of visual information may be recorded -- beyond those present in traditional photographs. Furthermore, if computational process can be made aware of these novel imaging models, them the scene can be analyzed in higher dimensions and novel aesthetic renderings of the visual information can be synthesized.We will discuss and play with thermal cameras, multi-spectral cameras, high-speed, and 3D range-sensing cameras and camera arrays. We will learn about opportunities in scientific and medical imaging, mobile-phone based photography, camera for HCI and sensors mimicking animal eyes. We will learn about the complete camera pipeline. In several hands-on projects we will build physical imaging prototypes and understand how each stage of the imaging process can be manipulated.

Creating a Composition on the Recorder

This resource is a summative assessment that can be used after a recorder unit where students learn basic note/rest values in 4/4 time, such as whole, half, and quarter notes and rests.  Students are asked to review the basics of 4/4 time, such as how many beats may fit into a measure and how many beats notes/rests may receive.  Students are asked to review all of the pitches that they've learned on the recorder so far and then fill out a chart stating how many whole, half, or quarter notes/rests may fit into a measure of 4/4 time.  Next, students will create an 8 measure recorder composition using all of the pitches they've learned on the recorder so far and whole, half, and quarter notes and rests.  Students will walk away from this assignment with a better understanding of how many whole, half, and quarter notes/rests fit into one measure of 4/4 time, using the pitches they've learned on the recorder, therefore reinforcing those concepts as well.

" Water supply is a problem of worldwide concern: more than 1 billion people do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. Water is a particular problem for the developing world, but scarcity also impacts industrial societies. Water purification and desalination technology can be used to convert brackish ground water or seawater into drinking water. The challenge is to do so sustainably, with minimum cost and energy consumption, and with appropriately accessible technologies. This subject will survey the state-of-the-art in water purification by desalination and filtration. Fundamental thermodynamic and transport processes which govern the creation of fresh water from seawater and brackish ground water will be developed. The technologies of existing desalination systems will be discussed, and factors which limit the performance or the affordability of these systems will be highlighted. Energy efficiency will be a focus. Nanofiltration and emerging technologies for desalination will be considered. A student project in desalination will involve designing a well-water purification system for a village in Haiti."

Teaches creative design based on the scientific method through the design, engineering, and manufacture of a detailed inlaid tile. This is an introductory lecture/studio course designed to teach students the basic principles of design and expose them to the design process. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the terminology and concepts that underlie all forms of visual art; which-in many ways-forms the basis for the design of all physical objects. Along with learning mechanical skills, thinking both critically and visually, and working with different media, the students will consider how the arts grow out of and respond to particular cultural contexts and ideas; and how these thinking patterns can be applied to virtually all types of design. Presentations, lectures, demonstrations, discussions and various artistic works will be used to show students how other artists and designers have dealt with the same issues they will be facing in lab. Each class will begin with a critique of the students' homework, followed by a discussion (and presentation when appropriate) of the pertinent issues of that week. All aspects of the course will aid the teams of students in designing and building a major inlaid tile whose elements are designed as digital solid models and manufactured on an abrasive waterjet machining center. The course will conclude with an exhibit of the completed tiles open to the MIT and the Greater-Boston public.
