I developed the new Business Law course to be used in the Business Management program at Western Technical College. This course is designed to introduce students to basic law terminology while connecting legal concepts to the world of business.
This project has great potential to eliminate unnecessary costs and time to students by offering them an overview of business law with readings, graphics, and videos all located in one convenient place. Students will have an opportunity to learn vocabulary, ethics, case studies, and see the law as it works in business with current events.
While creating this course, I was able to incorporate opportunities for students to learn in different ways. Finding current business cases to add to the readings will help students connect the material to the real world.
The Business Model Canvas (BMC) gives you the structure of a business plan without the overhead and the improvisation of a 'back of the napkin' sketch without the fuzziness. The Canvas has nine elements: Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Activities, Key Resources, Key Partnerships, Cost Structure. The Canvas is popular with entrepreneurs for business model innovation. Fundamentally, it delivers three things: focus, flexibility, and transparency.
This lesson teaches students about forms of business ownership. First, use the Discussion Guide (found in Task 1) to teach students about this concept. Then, use the activity (found in Task 2) to assess their understanding. This activity asks students to read short cases and determine the form of business ownership or ownership strategy that each case depicts. An answer key is included in the Resource Library. Through this assignment, students will explore the marketing mix for a breakfast product. Students will be asked to assume the role of a product manager for a cereal or snack foods division of a large consumer products firm. In this role, students will select one of six market segments to develop a product for. Students will focus on four specific target market characteristics outlined in their chosen market segment. Students will then answer the four areas of the marketing mix for their newly developed product.
