Biodiversity is a shortened form of the term "biological diversity." The entire spectrum of life forms and the many ecological processes support them. Wisconsin is blessed with abundant biodiversity. Located at the junction of the eastern deciduous forest, northern boreal forest and temperate grasslands, we have a wealth of species and natural communities.

Approximately 1,800 species of native plants and close to 700 species of native vertebrates have been identified in Wisconsin. In addition, there are thousands of species of non-vascular plants and invertebrates. These pages highlight the uncommon and rare species, natural communities, geological features and essential habitat areas throughout Wisconsin.

Recycling Infomercials

During a unit on recycling the students are challenged to find ways to reuse items they throw away to create useful products they can use at home.  The students create a product and then they create an infomercial to sell their product.  The student needs to consider what materials they used, how they are helping the environment by reusing trash, and they need to be creative.  The students present their infomericals to the rest of the class who represent a banking and investing group that evaluates the product and then determines if they would invest in it or not.  The students can make a video, slideshow or present face-to-face for this project.  The students are given instructions, a rubric and the banking and investing company evaluation sheet for this project.

This movie shows red-necked phalarope feeding behavior. The phalarope, indigenous to western North America, swims in circles to create a vortex to bring small crustaceans to the surface. The bird then uses its beak to draw food-rich water into its mouth, but until now, no one knew how. Using a mechanical model of the phalarope beak, researchers at MIT and their colleagues from Ecole Polytechnique in Paris recently discovered how the birds use surface interactions between their beaks and the water droplets to propel bits of food from beak tip to mouth

This lesson plan is to help teachers implement SAEs into their Agricultural Education curriculum. The main goal of the lesson is to explain to students what an SAE is and why it is an important part of Agricultural Education and the 3-circle model. This lesson will help teachers introduce their students to SAE projects. This is a basic level lesson to help the teacher and students get SAEs started in their classroom. I would highly recommend visiting The National Council’s SAE page at ffa.org prior to teaching this lesson.

As state and local education agencies increasingly focus on serving educators with their data systems, a common challenge has arisen: identifying the critical knowledge and skills needed by teachers and administrators to use data effectively. Many states are creating data literacy and data use training programs for pre- and in-service educators without a common foundation on which to base the content. In addition, several state education agencies and educator preparation programs have begun communicating about how to create a stronger alignment between pre- and in-service training for educators regarding data use.
