In this lesson, high school students look critically at the literary work "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe and its 1961 film interpretation. They use prediction strategies to form and refine their opinions about the story line progression in each work. They read the short story, screen the film, discuss reactions to both works, and plan and write a persuasive essay analyzing the validity of the film interpretation. This lesson is ideally suited for students who have experience with persuasive writing, and it can be adapted to work with any literature-film pairing.

Big Idea: 3-digit numbers can contain a “hundred," which is equal to 10 groups of 10. This lesson builds on previous lessons' work with two-digit numbers. The task asks students to model the three-digit number shown in the question according to guidelines, i.e. with only hundreds and tens. This approach gives students support in building three-digit numbers; the base ten blocks give students a jumping-off point for their thinking. For instance, they can immediately think about how they could show 21 in only ones instead of tens and ones. Special Materials: Base Ten Blocks

This resource is a summative assessment that can be used after a recorder unit where students learn basic note/rest values in 4/4 time, such as whole, half, and quarter notes and rests. Students are asked to review the basics of 4/4 time, such as how many beats may fit into a measure and how many beats notes/rests may receive. Students are asked to review all of the pitches that they've learned on the recorder so far and then fill out a chart stating how many whole, half, or quarter notes/rests may fit into a measure of 4/4 time. Next, students will create an 8 measure recorder composition using all of the pitches they've learned on the recorder so far and whole, half, and quarter notes and rests. Students will walk away from this assignment with a better understanding of how many whole, half, and quarter notes/rests fit into one measure of 4/4 time, using the pitches they've learned on the recorder, therefore reinforcing those concepts as well.

This research article provides the details of a current immunotherapy study performed by scientists at MIT. Immunotherapy is a relatively new and very promising cancer treatment that is now a focus of many cancer research labs. The article discusses what immunotherapy is, how T cell activation works, and how the treatment has eliminated some tumors in mice. As an interactive activity, students can practice making annotations in the margins of the article to check for understanding. Overall, students who read and dissect this article are learning how to comprehend complex biomedical research studies. As a supplemental activity, teachers can distribute the worksheet quiz posted in WISELearn. This set of questions (true/false, fill in the blank, multiple choice, short answer) assesses the students' comprehension levels of the current MIT immunotherapy research. An answer key is provided. The skills learned from investigating this article can hopefully be used to investigate other current biomedical research for human diseases and disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic shaped 2020 into a year characterized by public health and economic crises in the United States, destabilizing millions of families. One of the most striking and consistent indicators of ongoing hardship is an elevated level of food insecurity in American households. Food insecurity sits at the intersection of the economy and health; it is measure that a household lacks sufficient resources to provide adequate nutrition to its members.
In this brief activity, which could also be used as an assessment, students will analyze an infographic on the distribution of household income loss and very low food security among children by 2019 income levels.
To extend learning, the activity is linked to a blog post "Hungry at Thanksgiving: A Fall 2020 update on food insecurity in the U.S" by Lauren Bauer, Associate Director of The Hamilton Project.

"The easyCBM system was developed by educational researchers at the University of Oregon in close collaboration with school district partners across the United States. It is designed to give teachers insight into which of their students may need additional instructional supports as well as to provide a means by which they can measure the effectiveness of their teaching. System reports provide information that supports evidence-based decision making, and the Interventions interface streamlines the process of keeping track of students' instructional program, a feature that is particularly helpful for student study team meetings and parent conferences. The full District system includes a variety of curriculum based measures in the content areas of early literacy in both English and Spanish as well as oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. In addition, it offers mathematics measures with reach to both the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Point Standards and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, with built-in read-aloud and Spanish translation accommodations. The Teacher Deluxe Edition offers the same features as the District version, but is optimized for individual teacher, rather than system-wide adoption. A truncated version, the Lite Edition, is available free of charge for individual teachers."
