ASCD Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards: Making Your Efforts Effective Through a Focus on Text Complexity Demands

How do the Common Core English language arts standards differ from their predecessors? What do they emphasize? What are logical focus points for early implementation? The English and language arts standards depart radically from their predecessors with their insistence on text complexity and close reading skills.

This session, presented by David Liben from Student Achievement Partners, offered a look at various aspects of text complexity: how it is defined by the standards, as well as a range of measurement tools—including some newly developed and tested by the Race to the Text project—and how to use the tools for professional development. The focus on text complexity, close reading, and informational text has clear education implications as well. The presenter will examine some strategic focus areas for literacy instruction and explore ideas for bringing all constituencies to a fuller understanding of the Common Core standards and the features that make text complex.

The ASK exams are an industry certification that students can take and they are also listed on the approved list for CTE Incentive grants. There are 5 different exams that students can take: Fundamental Business Concepts, Fundamental Marketing Concepts, Concepts of Finance, Concepts of Entrepreneurship and Management, and Fundamentals of Ethics.

The Fundamental Business Concepts would be great for any student that has taken a variety of business classes in a program. It assessed basic business concepts, business communication, personal finance, marketing, and some management. Exams need to be taken on a computer at your location with a testing proctor.

Storytelling is an important part of traditional Native American culture. It is important to remember that some stories can only be told in the Winter out of respect for the names that can only be told when the snow is on the ground. Please use the references shared on this page in accordance with the respectful practice of Winter only storytelling. As always, it is best to have the guidance of an experienced elder and / or storyteller when planning best use in the classroom. This unit blended the use of traditional knowledge with textbook based science concepts to show the interconnection between them. Many traditional stories give an explanation of plant and animal adaptations that have a scientific benefit for the organism.
