This activity was created for an 11th grade Civics class.The goal of this project is for students to use employability skills to work together while experiencing employment opportunities in political science. Students will work to analyze one of the major or minor political parties in the United States. Group’s will attempt to persuade the class that their party’s solutions to the issues, are the best to lead the country.

It’s not easy to create an inclusive book collection. That’s because creating a diverse book collection is about more than just making sure X, Y, and Z are represented. It’s not a matter of ticking off check boxes or making sure quotas are filled. For those committed to doing it right, building a diverse book collection requires contemplation, research, and awareness. But the rewards are great: a truly diverse collection of books can turn children into lifelong readers and promote empathy, understanding, and self-confidence. To make things a little easier, we’ve created a checklist to help.

The project is called "Chemistry and Cooking" and it will last about 6 weeks. Students will learn about what matter is, the phases of matter, the difference between physical and chemical properties, as well as physical and chemical changes. The project’s Driving Question, which focuses our work, is “How does an understanding of chemistry impact your cooking?” Students will be involved in hands-on activities and labs that will help them learn the concepts that they will then apply to their final project. The child will work independently on a recipe of their choice to show their understanding of how chemistry impacts cooking.

This lesson builds on counting skills using an upbeat musical song. This is a foundational kindergarten concept and provides experience with rote counting, rythmic beat, and visual number recognition.  Students will begin to see the numeric patterning of numbers while singing the song.

This activity allows the user to explore different cross sections of various cones, cylinders, prisms, and pyramids. Cross sections can be difficult for students to understand, given that the concept requires that students switch between three-dimensional shapes and two-dimensional representations of those shapes.

This research article provides the details of a current immunotherapy study performed by scientists at MIT. Immunotherapy is a relatively new and very promising cancer treatment that is now a focus of many cancer research labs. The article discusses what immunotherapy is, how T cell activation works, and how the treatment has eliminated some tumors in mice. As an interactive activity, students can practice making annotations in the margins of the article to check for understanding. Overall, students who read and dissect this article are learning how to comprehend complex biomedical research studies. As a supplemental activity, teachers can distribute the worksheet quiz posted in WISELearn. This set of questions (true/false, fill in the blank, multiple choice, short answer) assesses the students' comprehension levels of the current MIT immunotherapy research. An answer key is provided. The skills learned from investigating this article can hopefully be used to investigate other current biomedical research for human diseases and disorders.

This is a handout used to practice decision-making processes.  It can be utilized to help students think out any decision needing to be made (i.e. what car to buy, how to stay healthy, what to do after high school, etc.). The handout starts with a basic Pros-Cons model, then utilizes the decision-making matrix, and lastly provides a page for students to write down their short and long term goals in various areas of their life. I use this handout in a 55 minute period class; but, it could be practiced more and extended to a longer class period.

Freedom of speech or the press did not exist in the colonies before the Constitution. British subjects were under the authority of the king, and the king punished dissenters. The king also controlled the press and censored content before it was published. After the colonists fought and won independence from England, the rules were changed when the Constitution was written.

Remembering the king’s actions, the Framers designed a government with three branches and a system of checks and balances to prevent the abuse of power. They also made the federal government responsible for protecting individual liberties and accountable to a separate, but all powerful group, the People.

Thomas Jefferson viewed the press as the “only safeguard for public liberty” and an informed citizenry as “the best army” for the task. Freedom of the press was seen as vital for protecting democracy so the Framers linked it to speech and included both in the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law … abridging freedom of speech, or of the press…”

Experience not only made its mark on the Constitution, but it also affected judicial interpretations that followed. In World War I, the Supreme Court upheld government actions against people in the interest of national security. Over the next 200 years, the Court would continue to grapple with freedom of expression issues in wartime. All the while, a watchful press would keep the public informed and debate alive. In 1971, the Supreme Court reaffirmed freedom of the press even in the midst of a war by allowing the publication of the Pentagon Papers. It had come full circle in its views.
