Through this assignment, students will explore the marketing mix for a breakfast product. Students will be asked to assume the role of a product manager for a cereal or snack foods division of a large consumer products firm. In this role, students will select one of six market segments to develop a product for. Students will focus on four specific target market characteristics outlined in their chosen market segment. Students will then answer the four areas of the marketing mix for their newly developed product.
Students are asked to compare two similar businesses in an effort to differentiate the business' target markets. Students will answer a series of questions about the business in order to create a customer profile. Students will utilize their customer profile to determine how and where that business should advertise. This helps students see that all decisions relate back to a business' target market.
An activity utilizing products in the school based enterprise to allow students to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of target markets and the marketing mix.
This lesson teaches students about market identification and segmentation, with a focus on ethics. First, use the Discussion Guide (found in Task 1) to teach students about this concept. Then, use the ethical case study and response questions to assess their understanding. This activity allows students to understand target marketing and its implications. Students are given a scenario for a lawn care business that is currently struggling. In order to improve the business, students will have to develop a plan that includes new business markets. The scenario can be see in the project description along with the rubric. Students utilize the template to complete and present their projects.
The goal of this assignment is for students to grasp the difference between business to consumer markets and business to business markets.
