This course provides an overview of robot mechanisms, dynamics, and intelligent controls. Topics include planar and spatial kinematics, and motion planning; mechanism design for manipulators and mobile robots, multi-rigid-body dynamics, 3D graphic simulation; control design, actuators, and sensors; wireless networking, task modeling, human-machine interface, and embedded software. In 2013, Kurt Squire and Constance Steinkuehler led the "Video Games and Learning MOOC" at University of Wisconsin-Madison. This video series, presented by Learning & Literacy Specialist, James Paul Gee, was a part of that course.

This quick-to-view, accessible video series explores the 13 "Good Learning Principles" found within well-designed video games; these learning principles align precisely with similar beneficial learning principles that are widely embraced within successful classrooms and other educational environments. The series' components were originally identified and discussed in James Paul Gee's book "What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy" (https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781403984531/whatvideogameshavetoteachusaboutlearningandliteracysecondedition).

The videos offer educators of all types that are interested in the learning principles of well-designed games a swift yet comprehensive overview of usable language and pedagogical concepts related to effective games-based learning; this information can be used to spark further research and discussion, or could be utilized to develop new learning pathways and methodologies in libraries and classrooms.

Students learn about radar imaging and its various military and civilian applications that include recognition and detection of human-made targets, and the monitoring of space, deforestation and oil spills. They learn how the concepts of similarity and scaling are used in radar imaging to create three-dimensional models of various targets. Students apply the critical attributes of similar figures to create scale models of a radar imaging scenario using infrared range sensors (to emulate radar functions) and toy airplanes (to emulate targets). They use technology tools to measure angles and distances, and relate the concept of similar figures to real-world applications.

In past times, ocean navigators tossed a piece of wood over the side of their ships and noted how long until the ship passed the wood. They used this time measurement and the length of the ship to calculate their speed and estimate how far they had traveled. In this activity, students act the part of a GPS signal traveling to the receiver to learn how travel time is converted to distance.

Student groups use the Java programming language to implement the algorithms for optical character recognition (OCR) that they developed in the associated lesson. They use different Java classes (provided) to test and refine their algorithms. The ultimate goal is to produce computer code that recognizes a digit on a scoreboard. Through this activity, students experience a very small part of what software engineers go through to create robust OCR methods. This software design lesson/activity set is designed to be part of a Java programming class.
