The project is called "Chemistry and Cooking" and it will last about 6 weeks. Students will learn about what matter is, the phases of matter, the difference between physical and chemical properties, as well as physical and chemical changes. The project’s Driving Question, which focuses our work, is “How does an understanding of chemistry impact your cooking?” Students will be involved in hands-on activities and labs that will help them learn the concepts that they will then apply to their final project. The child will work independently on a recipe of their choice to show their understanding of how chemistry impacts cooking.

Cooling Soup SPA

In this assessment, students are introduced to two competing claims about how thermal energy transfers when ice cubes are mixed with hot soup to cool down the soup. After drawing particle models and analyzing data about the ice and soup temperatures, students are asked to select which claim they agree with: Does energy transfer from the soup to the ice cubes or the ice cubes to the soup? By the end of this assessment, students are able to use evidence and reasoning to construct an argument supporting a claim about the direction of thermal energy transfer. An additional question at the end of the assessment is also provided as an optional extension for students to show evidence of their learning with additional creativity.

In this simulation, water and olive oil samples are heated or cooled and the movement of the particles can be observed. You can also see how adding a brick or iron to the liquids changes the temperature of the liquids and the solids added to them. In the systems view, students are able to see how energy is transformed into different types of energy.

Students will do an activity in which heat is transferred from hot water to metal washers and then from hot metal washers to water. Students will view a molecular animation to better understand the process of conduction at the molecular level. Students will also draw their own model of the process of conduction.

You will be investigating different materials to better understand the
phenomenon of Block A and B. In scientific experiments you can only
change one variable at a time. Thankfully Hand2Mind sells a group of
equal mass materials. Each of the objects shown to the right have a
mass of 16.0 grams.
You will use material selected from the list below to plan and conduct an
investigation on different materials. The purpose of this investigation is
to answer the following question:

How does the material affect the temperatures of
objects as they cool or heat in the environment?

Molecular Workbench is a FREE and OPEN SOURCE, downloadable software utilizing Visual, Interactive Simulations for Teaching & Learning Science.
A typical MW module is a comprehensive learning package consisting of a series of scaffolded pages that contain text, simulations, tools, controls, graphs, navigation links, and embedded assessments. The user interfaces of simulations in MW can be customized for students of different levels (grades 6-16). This unique feature enables it to support a wide range of instructional strategies such as inquiry-based, discovery-based, and problem-based learning. (For Windows, OSX. Must have Java)
