With the understanding that instructional materials matter, a team of ELA teachers from the Sheboygan Area School District set out to develop a process that would enable us to determine if the materials being used or materials we plan to use in the future are considered to be high-quality resources and will lead to equitable instruction.

The resources supplied were developed as a result of research and investigation into the work of EdReport.org, Achievethecore.org and various other resources that support the work of equity.

The process that we outline is intended to help teams evaluate resources that support major shifts in the Common Core State Standards specific to writing instruction. The tools linked in the process are adaptable to various grade levels and subject areas providing the team has unpacked the subject/grade level standards and share a common understanding of the skills and expectations in those standards.

Design Step 4: Engineering Analysis

Engineering analysis distinguishes true engineering design from "tinkering." In this activity, students are guided through an example engineering analysis scenario for a scooter. Then they perform a similar analysis on the design solutions they brainstormed in the previous activity in this unit. At activity conclusion, students should be able to defend one most-promising possible solution to their design challenge. (Note: Conduct this activity in the context of a design project that students are working on; this activity is Step 4 in a series of six that guide students through the engineering design loop.)

This rubric is intended for use as an assets-based tool for finding High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) for use as or within storylines adapted for use by Wisconsin educators and students. The tool is comprehensive and aspirational, combining standards from EQuiP and OpenSciEd, but most of the materials vetted within this space will not meet all criteria because they are not full units. Those using this tool are NOT conducting exhaustive reviews of materials, but providing their opinion on the strengths of the materials in these categories. The intent in developing this rubric was to find Wisconsin-relevant resources to swap in and out of a full HQIM storyline. Please review the open-ended comments to read what we believe to be the strengths of the materials and suggestions for how to use them within HQIM storylines.
