Field Trips for Career Exploration

Students use research and observation data (field trip) to objectively rank potential career opportunities to help guide their individual career choice and pathway. Learning goals/objectives: After completing this unit, students should be able to utilize an objective method for evaluating potential careers. Students will determine what career types and opportunities are best suited to themselves personally and defend their choices.

Careers in Agriculture

This multi-disciplinary career exploration unit builds on lesson plans available through the Michigan Agriculture in the Classroom website. Students will spend a week investigating different aspects of agriculture careers, while incorporating skills from math, English, and social studies. The unit culminates in a "Day in the Life" summative writing assignment.

Using Resources Effectively

In this math lesson, students will be using math skills to determine the best layout of industrial parts to be cut from a sheet of metal. Students will then calculate both the cost of the materials used and the percentage and cost of waste remaining after cutting out the industrial parts.

Quick and Easy Kaizen

Kaizen is a Japanese philosophy that believes “change is good”. “Kai” means change and “zen” means good. In business settings, Kaizen is also a strategic tool that brings about continuous improvement, in terms of increased productivity, superior quality, lower costs, efficient processes, increased safety and better customer experience. The word “Continuous” is worth remembering here as Kaizen is a never-ending improvement process. In this professional development activity, the Bonduel School District will be introduced to a quick and easy way to incorporate kaizen continuous improvement strategies into the education setting.

Timesheet for Employability Skills

In this weekly activity, students complete a self-assessment rubric and timesheets on a weekly basis and submit to the instructor. The teacher grades the timesheet and inserts their score into the rubric. The student then reflects on the instructor's score and makes necessary adjustments to their employability skills.

In this lesson, students will identify careers at local businesses. By communicating with area employers and identifying potential careers, students could possibly find a career they identify with and could pursue as a career path. 3D Modeling of Volume and Surface Area

Students will create a 3D model comprised of 3 different shapes. This will be done with Play-doh or in Tinkercad. They will then find the volume and surface area of the composite 3D shape.

Conversions and Engineering at a Paper Mill

This lesson goes over some basic elements of engineering and the paper making process. We will be using the circumference of a circle and conversions to program motors to make sure the dryer cans are going at the correct RPM's to ensure the paper machine functions correctly. This is a lesson that can be self taught or can be teacher led.

Stats and Probability at BPM (Quality Control/paper weight)

This Lesson Plan goes over how to find the Mean, Median, Mode, IQR, and Mean Absolute Deviation of a data set. We will go over some generic examples in the lesson and then do some practical application, as we find each of these from the samples taken to ensure consistent weight of the paper from BPM.

Work Place Safety

In this group research project, students will select an industrial accident to research. They will also examine the OSHA regulations which weren't followed which could have contributed to the accident, as well as brainstorming possible ways the accident could have been avoided. Finally, students will find three workplace environments to examine using a Safety Quiz.

The Importance of Giving Clear Instructions

In this lesson, students will reinforce the importance of giving clear instructions to a partner for a desired outcome or result, similar to what is needed in a real world work environment, when instructions or notes need to be communicated in person to or left in written form for a co-worker who may be on a different shift and need to complete a project. In the real world, if instructions are not clear, machines or entire assembly lines may be down for a period of time which causes the company to lose money. This lesson will be used in conjunction with Code.org's Course D (2019) curriculum (https://studio.code.org/s/coursed-2019) after the initial lesson called Graph Paper Programming - https://curriculum.code.org/csf-19/coursed/1/. In this lesson, students will use what they just learned about programming, sequencing, and algorithms (set of instructions) and take it a step further by communicating instructions for navigating through a series of steps to a partner who either has their eyes closed (or is wearing a blindfold) from a starting to finishing point, while picking up small blocks (or something similar) along the way.
