This powerpoint is an introduction to the use of figurative language. It uses definitions and visual examples to assist students with the various types of figurative language.  There is a quiz at the end of the slide show to assess student learning/understanding of figurative language.

The Figurative Language Terms worksheet was created for the CESA #1 EL OER Project. Having a deep understanding of figurative language is essential while acquiring the English language. For many EL students, understanding the different terms is overwhelming. This worksheet provides students with the opportunity to watch videos and listen to songs to increase their background knowledge of various figurative language terms. Students will have exposure to: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, alliteration, idiom, allusion, and personification. They will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the terms by writing definitions, drawing labeled pictures, and/or creating individual examples.

When students write argumentative or persuasive essays, they often ignore the viewpoints of their opponents, the potential readers of their essays. In this minilesson, students respond to a hypothetical situation by writing about their position on the subject. After sharing their thoughts with the class, students consider the opposite point of view and write about arguments for that position. They then compare their position with that of their potential audience, looking for areas of overlap. They then revise their arguments, with the audience's point of view and areas of commonality in mind. Examining the opposing view allows students to better decide how to counter their opponent logically, perhaps finding common ground from which their arguments might grow. Thus, the activity becomes a lesson not only in choosing arguments but also in anticipating audience reaction and adapting to it.

The overview for this lesson is for students to work together in peer review utilizing the strategy of warm and cool feedback based on the sixt traits of writing.  After this lesson, students will take the feedback that they have given to each other and revise their essay, specifically revising to show growth on the goals that they made over the course of this lesson.

This guide provides teachers with background information and classroom activities to extend the viewing experience of the film "Muslims." The classroom exercises are designed for teachers who have a working knowledge of the difference between stereotypes and facts about Islam. You may want to use the background information in this guide to familiarize yourself with Islam prior to doing any of these activities. If you are not comfortable in your own knowledge, some of these exercises could perpetuate stereotypes about Muslims rather than correct them.

The resource is a full interview (approximately 17 minutes) with the author of Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston.  She discusses civil rights violations regarding the internment of Japanese Americans in camps in the western U.S. during WWII.
Students watch this author interview to supplement knowledge learned during the reading of the author's book.  They will glean additional information about the time period, the history, the events, as well as the feelings of the author during the events of the book and after writing the book as she is now in the interview.

These grammar resources will help you instruct on basic grammar skills for 8th grade throughout the course of the year. 

GIST is a strategy to help students write brief, accurate, and complete summaries of material they read. In this lesson students work together summarizing larger and larger portions of text, but keeping their summaries at 25 words or fewer. Students will be able to summarize portions of informational or literary text. Students will be able to work in small groups to think critically about and discuss text.

The Gen i Revolution consists of sixteen interactive missions in which students complete a variety of activities to help the learn important personal finance concepts.
