How many cookies did the Cookie Monster eat? This 3 Act Task by Graham Fletcher begins with a short portion of a video with Cookie Monster eating cookies. First students make observations and estimates to begin determining how many cookies the puppet ate. Students can then use pictures of the cookie label package, a full package of cookies, and the remaining cookies after the puppet ate some. Students are estimating, adding, and subtracting within 50 to determine the number of cookies the Cookie Monster ate.

Counting By Tens In Mid-Decades
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This lesson was used with a tier 3 fourth grade intervention math group to help students move from counting by tens and ones separately to counting by tens in mid-decades (for example: 44 + 33, students would count 54, 64, 74, 75, 76, 77). I started this lesson by having students explore the columns of a hundreds chart. Students highlighted one column at a time and recited the counting sequence from top to bottom. We then connected the reciting to matching numeric equations. The next step was to use the counting by mid-decade knowledge to solve addition equations. Students used open number lines to model the addition.

Lessons have been developed to engage students in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM). In addition to original lessons, our
Cranberry STEAM lesson plans have been derived from existing plans that
have been altered and enhanced to include Ag-literacy components. With
these resources volunteers, teachers, and other agricultural advocates will
help our youth better connect where food comes from, teach them about
healthy eating and provide fun educational experiences.

Creating a Composition on the Recorder
Rating
0.0 stars

This resource is a summative assessment that can be used after a recorder unit where students learn basic note/rest values in 4/4 time, such as whole, half, and quarter notes and rests.  Students are asked to review the basics of 4/4 time, such as how many beats may fit into a measure and how many beats notes/rests may receive.  Students are asked to review all of the pitches that they've learned on the recorder so far and then fill out a chart stating how many whole, half, or quarter notes/rests may fit into a measure of 4/4 time.  Next, students will create an 8 measure recorder composition using all of the pitches they've learned on the recorder so far and whole, half, and quarter notes and rests.  Students will walk away from this assignment with a better understanding of how many whole, half, and quarter notes/rests fit into one measure of 4/4 time, using the pitches they've learned on the recorder, therefore reinforcing those concepts as well.

Crossing the Decade Card Game

This is a modification of the Illustrative Math lesson, "Crossing the Decade Concentration" https://www.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/1/NBT/A/1/tasks/405. This lesson was used with a tier 3 fourth grade intervention math group to help students count forward and backward by ones; specifically focusing on crossing the decades. I modified this lesson by extending the counting sequence to 200 instead of 100 and placed cards in 4 by 4 arrays instead of 3 by 3. My students were quite proficient counting forward across decades, but were not with counting backward across decades, so I also modified the game to practice this. Students picked from the "_0" number cards first and had to verbalize the number one back, the "_9" number. It was very important that they verbalize that number to show that they were truly thinking about crossing the decades versus just "guessing" for the card match. My students also needed additional practice crossing decades with numbers in the 100s so I extended the cards to 200 to practice this.

This math task involves concepts, procedure, and application of fraction division; devotes attention to a mathematically important case (dividend equal to 1); builds on fraction division work from fifth grade; and, engages students in constructing viable arguments and critiquing the arguments of others. Students use
visual models to support understanding, work individually and collaboratively, and share their developing thinking in order to determine how many servings of rice they consumed if they ate 1 full cup and there are 2/3 cup to a serving.

The Curious Subtraction Task
Rating
0.0 stars

According to Achieve the Core, (achievethecore.org), "The joint purpose of this task is to provide students an opportunity to practice two-digit subtraction with regrouping and to engage students in looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning (MP.8). Throughout grade 2, students need many opportunities to practice subtraction in order to achieve fluency subtracting within 100 by the end of the grade. For students in grade 2, it is sufficient for them to recognize that differences of 9 will stem from numbers whose digits differ by 1, subtractions resulting in 18 will stem from numbers whose digits differ by 2, etc. "

This research article provides the details of a current immunotherapy study performed by scientists at MIT. Immunotherapy is a relatively new and very promising cancer treatment that is now a focus of many cancer research labs. The article discusses what immunotherapy is, how T cell activation works, and how the treatment has eliminated some tumors in mice. As an interactive activity, students can practice making annotations in the margins of the article to check for understanding. Overall, students who read and dissect this article are learning how to comprehend complex biomedical research studies. As a supplemental activity, teachers can distribute the worksheet quiz posted in WISELearn. This set of questions (true/false, fill in the blank, multiple choice, short answer) assesses the students' comprehension levels of the current MIT immunotherapy research. An answer key is provided. The skills learned from investigating this article can hopefully be used to investigate other current biomedical research for human diseases and disorders.
