Lisa Krohn, Director of Teaching and Learning, challenged teachers at Johnson Creek Elementary School to rethink the traditional format of student learning and assessment and, focus on how to create successful learners. Students are now grouped by academic readiness instead of age. Teachers transitioned from being grade level teachers (e.g. 3rd grade teacher) to “Focus Area Advisors” specializing in math or literacy. The workshop model allows students to be active learners engaging in formative assessment practices including conferring, journaling, and computer adaptive programs to name a few.Read more about these practices wuthin the module.

Throughout Wisconsin, districts and schools are pioneering promising practices in student assessment, moving from the theory of a strategic assessment system to a viable system that ensures students will graduate college and career ready. Examples of these promising practices are being shared in WISELearn (a part of the Wisconsin Information System for Education (WISE). They reflect only a glimpse of what Strategic Assessment Systems look like in schools and districts across Wisconsin.

In the 1870’s, the United States Government began a system of education for Native Americans in the U.S. Richard Pratt, a military veteran of the Civil War, was chosen to lead a school intended to assimilate Native American children into white American culture. Students there would be forced to cut their hair, speak the English language, change their names to Christian names, and change from their traditional religious beliefs to Christianity. Pratt founded the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, PA in 1873. The boarding schools would have a profoundly negative impact upon generations of Native Americans and forced many to lose contact with their traditional culture. Several boarding schools were operated in Wisconsin, including one in Lac du Flambeau, WI.

The numerical methods, formulation and parameterizations used in models of the circulation of the atmosphere and ocean will be described in detail. Widely used numerical methods will be the focus but we will also review emerging concepts and new methods. The numerics underlying a hierarchy of models will be discussed, ranging from simple GFD models to the high-end GCMs. In the context of ocean GCMs, we will describe parameterization of geostrophic eddies, mixing and the surface and bottom boundary layers. In the atmosphere, we will review parameterizations of convection and large scale condensation, the planetary boundary layer and radiative transfer.

This video demonstrates how to help students learn to expect direction from one spot in the classroom. Teachers will consider why it is effective to have students' full attention before teaching or giving directions; how teacher consistency improves student response; and what additional cues or signals may be used to capture students' attention?

In this simulation of a doctor's office, students play the roles of physician, nurse, patients, and time-keeper, with the objective to improve the patient waiting time. They collect and graph data as part of their analysis. This serves as a hands-on example of using engineering principles and engineering design approaches (such as models and simulations) to research, analyze, test and improve processes.

Higher learning organizations frequently offer courses isolated from other disciplines or areas of concentration. The intent of this study was to explore collaboration practices on authentic based projects involving two distinct courses from differing programs: Instructional Technology and Educational Leadership. This paper describes the strategies of designing effective learning environments for multidisciplinary collaboration and problem-based learning and reports the effectiveness of those strategies. The result of the collaboration was the production of various multimedia interactive professional development training materials developed by the technology students on various topics proposed by the school administrators. The collaborative learning practices provided the opportunity to not only give and receive knowledge among the participants but also view this exchange as a responsibility to create a collaborative culture within the university.
