Perching Parrot

Students explore the concepts of center of mass and static equilibrium by seeing how non-symmetrical objects balance. Using a paper cut-out shape of a parrot sitting on a wire coat hanger, they learn that their parrot exists in stable equilibrium — it returns to its balancing point after being disturbed. The weight of its tail makes the parrot balance upright. Give the parrot a push, and she knocks off balance, but swings back and forth until coming to rest in balance again.

Personal Finance Education in the Community by Nicole Modl

Rating

The focus of this study is to research the need to provide financial education to adults in a community through a community education program. Financial literacy allows individuals to make informed and effective financial decisions. Research has proven that as adults age, their financial needs change and many are left unprepared without support or resources. These are changes such as additional healthcare expenses, retirement planning, and living off a fixed income. It is also noted that young adults are transitioning into adulthood at a slower pace and often adding unplanned extra expenses to their parents. Participants are asked to conduct an anonymous survey. The survey will collect information such as gender and age group. Other data collected will include the interest of taking a personal finance course through the community education program, topics of interests as well as ranking the topics from very interested to not interested, how often the course should run, what time of the year it should run, and finally on what platform it should be delivered such as in-person, online, or in-person and online. Data collected from the survey will determine if there is a want for a personal finance course in the community.

Personality Styles Extension Activity
Rating
0.0 stars

Students will take a personality style quiz that is already uploaded in Xello to discover their understanding of how they may or may not enjoy a career. Students will go through a 28 question survey with questions based on how they feel about a specific topic. The rating scale is based on how much you like an activity:
Like it very much, like, not sure, dislike, dislike very much
The results from the survey are based off the Holland Model:
Builders; Thinkers; Creators; Helpers and Persuaders.

Once a student finishes the 28 question personality style survey they will go right into the Personality style Lesson (roughly 30-40 min) that will match careers with their personality style focusing on the type of work environment and task that students will enjoy based off their style. Specific topics within the lesson are:
What’s a Personality Style?, Job Tasks and Personality Style, Your Personality Style, Personality Style Advantages and Career Exploration.

It invites them to write and speak in a variety of ways and for different audiences and purposes. Students engage in close reading of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech, Aristotleí˘ä‰ĺ䋢s Three Appeals, Robert Kennedyí˘ä‰ĺ䋢s On the Assassination of Martin Luther King, and George Wallaceí˘ä‰ĺ䋢s The Civil Rights Movement: Fraud, Sham, and Hoax, Barbara Jordaní˘ä‰ĺ䋢s All Together Now. PhET Simulation: Estimation

This interactive Flash animation allows students to explore size estimation in one, two and three dimensions. Multiple levels of difficulty allow for progressive skill improvement. In the simplest level, users estimate the number of small line segments that can fit into a larger line segment. Intermediate and advanced levels offer feature games that explore area of rectangles and circles, and volume of spheres and cubes. Related lesson plans and student guides are available for middle school and high school classroom instruction. Editor's Note: When the linear dimensions of an object change by some factor, its area and volume change disproportionately: area in proportion to the square of the factor and volume in proportion to its cube. This concept is the subject of entrenched misconception among many adults. This game-like simulation allows kids to use spatial reasoning, rather than formulas, to construct geometric sense of area and volume. This is part of a larger collection developed by the Physics Education Technology project (PhET).

Pingus Penguins: Writing Good Instructions

Students use the free computer game Pingus to learn how engineers, specifically environmental engineers, use their technical writing skills to give instructions and follow the instructions of others. Students learn to write instructions to express their ideas in clear, organized ways using descriptive, un-ambiguous sentences, as an example of one type of technical writing that important for engineers. The students write instructions enumerating how to beat a game level, which represents surveying that level for environmental problems. As a test of their instructions, students review each others' instructions and offer suggestions for improvement, and then revise their instructions to make them better. Students also see some examples of environmental problems.
