    Overview

    Welcome to one of 12 Business, Marketing and Information Technology Quality Modules! The purpose of these modules is to illustrate quality examples of each of the 2018 ACTE Quality CTE Framework elements. Regardless if you are in a pre-service education program or an experienced educator, these modules will benefit your future and business & marketing program

    11. Work-based Learning addresses the delivery of a continuum of work-based learning involving sustained, meaningful interactions with industry or community professionals that foster in-depth, firsthand engagement with the tasks required in a given career field. Experiences may be delivered in workplaces, in the community, at educational institutions and/or virtually, as appropriate, and include a range of activities such as workplace tours, job shadowing, school-based enterprises, internships and apprenticeships.

    A. Continuum of Work-Based Learning Experiences

    There is one resource being discussed in this video which outlines the marketing education department courses and offerings at Holmen High School and their corresponding work-based learning experience components and how they progress in intensity to be offered to all students at some point during the program of study.  

    • Holmen High School Course Description Guide - this resource includes the components of Holmen High School's Course Description Guide that outline the Holmen High School Marketing and Business Department offerings including the department mission statement, broad goals, college credit options, course list, course program of study flowchart, and course descriptions. Also outlined in the course description is the school's offering of Youth Apprentice and Transcripted Credit options as available programs at HHS. 

    B. Alignment with National, State and/or Local Standards

    There are four resources being shown in this video. One is an overview of all course level standards addressed in marketing courses at Holmen High School, and the last three being examples of how those standards are aligned to various projects/ assessments in the capstone Entrepreneurship course at HHS.  

    • Marketing Course Standards Spreadsheet - this resource highlights the course level standards that are addressed in all 5 of Holmen's marketing courses. Each course is aligned in some way with work-based learning and standards address those experiences.
    • Entreprenurship Book Study - this resource aligns with a work based learning project where after students complete a book study with our building principal related to management/ professional development topics they create a professional development experience for their classmates related to a book study of their choice to demonstrate management principles gained from the model store experience. The resource includes the listing of the standards utilized to frame this work-based learning experience.
    • Entrepreneurship Teacher Evaluation - this resource is the evaluation document used by instructors to evaluate the students (employees) during the model store expereince. This resource is used to exaluate employabilitiy skills and guide students throughout the semester long work-based learning class project. This resource includes the listing of the standards utilized to frame this work-based learning experience.
    • Entrepreneurship Student Evaluation Template - this resource is the evaluation document that students in the Entrepreneurship class create collaboratively to outline thier expectations for members of the store/ department and then are used by the students to evaluate their peers to demonstrate the functions of management (planning, organizing, leading and controlling). This resource includes the listing of the standards utilized to frame this work-based learning experience.

    C. Reinforcement of Technical, Academic and Employability Knowledge and Skills

    There are four resources being shown in this video relating the to technical, academic and employability knowledge and skills being reinforced during student involvement in the work based learning experience provided by working shifts in our Maroon Mug, HHS's coffeshop school based enterprise. 

    • Maroon Mug Pre-Work Shift Quiz - this resource demonstrates the assessment of student technical, academic and employability knowledge and skills that they take after our lessons and training on working in the Maroon Mug. They take this quiz before they are allowed to work their optional or required shifts in the school based enterprise. Students need to attain 100% on the quiz before being allowed to work in the Maroon Mug.  
    • Maroon Mug Evaluation - this resource demonstrates the assessment of student technical, academic and employability knowledge and skills that they are assessed on while working in the Maroon Mug. Evaluations are made by the marketing teacher supervising the school based enterprise that day to inform students of their attainment of these standards and to reinforce the technical, academic and employability knowledge and skills necessary to work in the school based enterprise. 

    E. Maximizing Meaningful Interaction with Business Professionals

    There are six resources being shown in this video highlighting the way various work-based learning experiences at Holmen High School are delivered with methods that maximize meaningful interaction with business professionals.  

    • Advanced Marketing Altra Promotion Project Presentation Scoring Rubric - this resource assesses the students on their promotion project presentation created with Altra Federal Credit Union as the client. Students create a comprehensive promotion project based on market research and then present their ideas to business professionals in the Altra Marketing Department with multiple promotions to be selected to run in the high school branch of Altra Federal Credit Union which is located in our School Store. 
    • Advanced Marketing Altra Project Sample - this Google Slide presentation is a sample of student work created for the Altra Promotion Project which is a work-based learning experience for students in the Advanced Marketing course at Holmen High School. This promotion idea was utilized in the high school branch of Altra Federal Credit Union at HHS. 
    • Market Research/ DECA Sample Questions for DECA Written Project - this resource is utilized in the Market Research Class and in our DECA chapter as a starting point for student interviews with local business professionals as they start their written projects as part of DECA's competitive events program. Students work with business professionals to learn about their businesses and then come up with their own ideas in the 3 categories of DECA's 20 page written projects (Business Operations Research events, Project Management events and Entrepreneurship events)
    • Sports and Entertainment Marketing Field Trip Assignment - this resource is the project description for Sports and Entertainment Marketing students to schedule field trips with local Sports and Enteratinment Marketing professionals at SEM venues and facilities. Students, while not specifically engaging in work with these businesses and professionals, learn from each professionals work environments, industry experience and knowledge and learn proper communications with business professionals to learn more about their industries.
    • Sports and Entertainment Marketing Athletic Program Sample - this resource is the final product of a work-based learning project that Sports and Entertainment Marketing students complete as a class project. This hands on application project requires students to demonstrate sales skills to sell advertisements to local businesses for inclusion into the annual athletic program along with the design of the pages for each athletic page. 
    • Entrepreneurship Model Store Vendor Letter - this resource is a student created letter and application/ agreement for vendors as part of the model store work-based learning experience. Students in the sales department of the Entrepreneurship class create this document and then use it to contact vendors to have them sell their products on a consignment agreement for the model store retail business that the class begins each year. 

    I. Student Reflection and Documentation

    There are 3 resources being shown in this video that are assignments used to guide students to engage in reflection and document learning resulting from work-based learning experiences in the Entrepreneurship couse at Holmen High School.

    • Entrepreneurship Journal Assignment - this resource is an ongoing journal that students keep throughout the model store experience in the Entrepreneurship class that allows them to reflect on their learning from the hands on, student centered, culminating capstone class project in the marketing department at Holmen High School. 
    • Entrepreneurship Final Part 1- Evaluation Reflection- this resource is the student's reflection and compilation of their evaluations (both self evaluations and peer evaluations) throughout the course of the model store work-based learning expereince in the Entrepreneurship course. This resource documents their learning from the experience and what they gain to take forward into their future career plans. 
    • Entrepreneurship Final Part 2- Model Store Reflection Paper- this resource is the student assessment that looks at their reflection on the model store work- based learning experience in the Entreprenurship course. This resource demonstrates the student's ability to evaluate their work as part of the collaborative group of students that created the model store retail business and on their learning in the Entrepreneurship course.
