In this unit, high school juniors will research one career of their choice, based on analysis of results of their three assessments on Career Cruising (Career Matchmaker, Ability Profiler and Learning Styles Inventory). In this process, students will develop the skills necessary to writing a high-quality, well-founded research paper. Topics will include source integrity, works cited pages (both formatting and the creation of citations for works cited page), the correct format for various in-text citations, stages of research, development of graphic organizers, translation of graphic organizer in the creation of an outline, transferring outline topics to paragraphs, developing strong introductory and concluding paragraphs, creating effective transition sentences, formatting cover pages, editing, revising, peer editing and submission of final draft.

Provides graduate students and fellows with techniques that enhance both validity and responsible conduct in scientific practice. Topics include study design, laboratory practice, treatment of data, human and animal research, intellectual property, preparation of proposals, research papers, posters, and oral presentations. Also discussed are mentoring relationships and career options. Aspects of responsible research conduct are integrated as appropriate to the specific topic under discussion. Subject satisfies the training grant requirements of the NIH for education in the responsible conduct of research. This course is designed to provide graduate students and postdoctoral associates with techniques that enhance both validity and responsible conduct in scientific practice. Lectures present practical steps for developing skills in scientific research and are combined with discussion of cases. The course covers study design, preparation of proposals and manuscripts, peer review, authorship, use of humans and non-human animals in research, allegations of misconduct, and intellectual property. Also discussed are mentoring relationships and career options. Aspects of responsible research conduct are integrated into lectures and case discussion as appropriate to the specific topic. The formation of a personal career identify or work personality is the key to helping students understand the type of careers that they will find fulfilling. The key is guiding the students through assessments where thematic, or repeating characteristics, are identified with the help of teachers, counselor, or other adults. This collection of lessons has been used successfully with "at-risk" youth many times. The student identifies career clusters of interests then correlates their work personality/career identity to the pathway within career clusters of interest. This strategy helps organize the world of careers into a more manageable one so the student can conceptualize the selection of careers using a simple guided process. There are written assessments for use and links to online. Educators may want to utilize tools that are available to them. Teachers working with homeless and "at-risk" youth have indicated that the hard copy assessments are necessary to their work. The process will remain the same. It is important that the students see the results of the assessment and descriptions in one place to assist with the identification of reoccuring themes.
