Jo Wilder and the Capitol Case – PBS Wisconsin Education
Rating
0.0 stars

Play as Jo Wilder, a scrappy girl who spends her days with her pet badger Teddy and her grandpa, a historian. When some mysterious artifacts show up at the History Museum, you must unravel the clues to find the real stories behind the artifacts.

Students will engage with the game as a tool for critical thinking and historical inquiry. As the plot unfolds, players come across primary source materials. They use the same skills as real historians: investigation, identification, corroboration and contextualizing evidence. To win each challenge, players must piece together the evidence to argue their case.

Jo Wilder and the Capitol Case is just the spark for a world of deeper learning opportunities that you create with students in your own classroom. Access the educator guide for guiding questions to use with learners, game save codes, standards supported, and more.

The activities in this four-lesson unit enable students to use their knowledge of number, measurement, and geometry to solve interesting problems. Planning and visualizing, estimating and measuring, and testing and revising are components of the ladybug activities. Students design "virtual paths" that enable a ladybug to either hide under a leaf or go through a maze. They develop navigational skills by testing their path and revising it. Two interactive Java applets (Ladybug Mazes and Hiding Ladybug, cataloged separately) support student solutions.

Mystery Cube Activity- Introducing Inquiry and the Nature of Science

The Mystery Cube activity is a great way to teach students about inquiry, the nature of science, and constructing/communicating evidence-based claims. The students are given a paper cube, and without touching or lifting it, they must use observations about what is visible on the other faces of the cube to reason about what is on the bottom. There are three cube activities (a simple, primer-to-the-task cube; a more complex cube; a create-your-own cube) that can be used separately, used subsequently, or adapted as needed to match the intended grade level.
