In this lesson, students will explore the travels and discoveries of the Vikings. After viewing a short video about the Eric the Red and Leif Ericson, students will analyze a painting that depicts a Viking ship at sea and then read an Icelandic saga written about the early Norse people. The lesson will conclude with students researching the impact the Vikings had on the region of their choice and completing a report or presentation.

This series of lessons introduces students to the expectations of members of different groups. In the first lesson, students explore what it means to be members of their closest groups like the family, classroom, and a team. Towards, the end of the lesson students move on to discussions about more abstract groups such as a neighborhood or a town. In the second lesson, students learn the difference between the rights and responsibilities of US citizens outlined in the US Constitution. Finally, the accumulating activity asks classrooms to stage a mock election where students are asked to choose a fun class activity. Students are asked to use their knowledge of rights and responsibilities to make a choice that serves the common good of the class.
Students will analyze documents from the War Department’s Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands — better known as the Freedmen’s Bureau — that Congress established on March 3, 1865, as the Civil War was coming to an end. Using the scale in Weighing the Evidence, students will evaluate the effectiveness of the Freedmen’s Bureau in assisting formerly enslaved persons.
