Students will view 3D photographs from the Civil War and use them as a primary source to help understand the Civil War.   Students will learn to use inferencing to help draw conclusions about the settings, people, and events that are shown in the photographs.

This sequence of lessons is based on text-dependent questions that are answered through a close reading of the article, "Girl Power" from the Washington Post's Kids' Post.

Students will use the Hopscotch or Tynker App (either on an iPad or web-based) to create their own video game.  This project is designed for grades 6-8 but could be adopted to other grades.  The project is intended for use after students complete the 20 hour course on introduction to coding on Code.org (https://studio.code.org/s/20-hour)

"The bridge from algorithms to programming can be a short one if students understand the difference between planning out a sequence and encoding that sequence into the appropriate language. This activity will help students gain experience reading and writing in shorthand code."

This resource is a lesson plan for teaching compare and contrast comprehension stategy using two Cinderella fairy tale stories.

This is a complete lesson plan with passages and resources provided.  This includes standards addressed as well as ideas for stuggling learner.  The lesson focuses on comparing and contrasting two nonfiction texts.

These lessons compare different versions of the fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, giving students an opportunity to talk about the similiarities and differences among the different stories.  Students are then introduced to non-fiction text about wolves to determine different perscpectives of the wolf as a villian in the stories.

In this lesson, students will learn the steps involved in computational thinking.  Decomposition, pattern matching, abstraction, and algorithms are all steps that make up the computational thinking process. This process is used in many learning subjects and in real-life learning.  Learners discover how understanding each step can help them as a learner and also nurture a growth mindset.

Students will read and discuss the legends of three inseparable sisters, corn, bean, and squash, who only grow and thrive together. This relates to the tradition of interplanting corn, beans, and squash in the same mounds, which is widespread among Native American farming societies. It is a sustainable system that provided long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet for generations. The students will also develop an understanding of symbiotic relationships found between organisms living in the same ecosystems.

CESA #1EL OER Project: A graphic organizer to be used during country projects. The organizer has sentence frames and ideas on what to research on.

This mini unit walks students through the question/discovery process of nonfiction literature.  The first lesson encourages students to wonder while reading.  Then students research to find the answers to their questions.  They explore ways to show/write their new learning.  As a class the kids work to publish 1 or 2 classroom books on the research topic.  This is a great way to introduce the nonfiction unit and then let each student write thier own question book based on the process they used with the class book.

A lesson teaching students how to write a table of contents.  The lesson includes a video from You Tube that explains what a table of contents is.  The included PDF is a compilation of 5 blank templates for the students to use when creating a table of contents for their specific writing piece.

A fun activity to do in April when you are talking about recycling!  Students will take recycled materials (I use computer parts) and create and insect, then they will create a narrative about a day in the life of a their recycled insect!

The video models a 6th-grade teacher, Viet-ly Nguyen, using student talk to analyze and interpret characters' actions in a selection from One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.  During the student talk, the teacher adds criteria to the discussion to guide students as a participation protocol.

In this online tool, students can learn about and write diamante poems, which are diamond-shaped poems that use nouns, adjectives, and gerunds to describe either one central topic or two opposing topics (for example,  or ). Examples of both kinds of diamante poems can be viewed online or printed out.

This is a breakdown of the novel "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and is set up to move slow.  It is set up so that students are able to recall events within each reading as they are directly taken from the book.  This could be printed off for students to fill out or could be up loaded to google classroom for students to fill in.
