Advanced subject focusing on techniques, format, and prose style used in academic and professional life. Emphasis on writing as required in fields such as economics, political science, and architecture. Short assignments include: business letters, memos, and proposals that lead toward a written term project. Methods designed to deal with the special problems of those whose first language is not English. Successful completion satisfies Phase II of the Writing Requirement. This workshop is designed to help you write clearly, accurately and effectively in both an academic and a professional environment. In class, we analyze various forms of writing and address problems common to advanced speakers of English. We will often read one another's work.

Students utilize resumes, cover letters, and examples of their best work to develop an online portfolio. The goal of the portfolio is for students to use during the employment search process.

This assignment creating a personalized cover letter is targeted to 11th and 12-grade students in a Business Communications or Career course. Through this assignment, students will be creating a customized cover letter that allows them to stand out against other applicants.  Their cover letter should be tailored to fit the needs of the school or company and position you are interested in.

Students will be able to:
-Explain key strategies to maximize the effectiveness of a resume and cover letter
-Analyze real examples of resumes and cover letters to determine their effectiveness
-Create their own resume and cover letter that meet the criteria for success

In this 105-minute lesson, students will be able to:
-Explain what a resume and cover letter are and how they are used in the hiring process
-Identify how a resume differs from a LinkedIn profile
-Write a resume with little to no work experience
-Create a resume and cover letter for yourself

In this lesson, you will write a one-page cover letter to include with a resume when applying for a job. You'll have the opportunity to review some cover letters to see which information makes the most impact with employers and then create one of your own.
