This task/game allows students to practice addition while also thinking about ways to organize counting by randomly selecting two (two-digit) number cards and finding the sum. In addition, students are prompted with guiding questions to promote discourse. In closure, students use writing to reflect on their learning and thinking strategies during the game.

The purpose of this task is to help students understand the connection between counting and cardinality. Thus, oral counting and recording the number in digit form are the most important aspects of this activity. However, teachers can extend this by making a bar graph about how many students are wearing the color each day.

This task gives students another way to practice counting and gain fluency with connecting a written number with the act of counting. This task should be introduced by the teacher and would then be a good independent center.

The most engaging way to practice counting with students is to have them count meaningful things in their lives. Since five-year-olds are very focused on themselves this is easily done by allowing them to count themselves, their friends and objects within the classroom that relate to their daily lives.

This google slide presentation describes a numeracy routine for Kindergarten use during the second quarter. The routine involves sequencing various representations of numbers on a clothesline. Printable materials are included.

This google slide show will be used by kindergarten grade teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. Directions for the teacher are found here. Students should be given time to notice and wonder about each slide. Then, a nice practice is to build a number line with a too high and too low decided upon by the class. Students can then adjust their thinking and refine their estimate as needed.
