In this assessment in a one-to-one setting, a student is shown the numbers from 1Đ10, one number at a time, in random order. The teacher asks, Ňwhat number is this?"

This assessment task can be used with a single student or a small group of students. Each student needs his or her own set of numeral cards.

This assessment may be used in a small group or whole group setting, give each student a piece of paper. Students who have trouble writing certain numbers can then get targeted practice.

This task/game allows students to practice addition while also thinking about ways to organize counting by randomly selecting two (two-digit) number cards and finding the sum. In addition, students are prompted with guiding questions to promote discourse. In closure, students use writing to reflect on their learning and thinking strategies during the game.

In this online game, students will practice counting forward from a given number with the known sequence.  Students choose a starting point and then will practice sequencing numbers in a 20 digit range.

In this lesson students will understand that they can begin counting at a number other than 1 in a counting sequence. Students will understand that numbers follow a sequence. this will help students gain an understanding of operations as they learn to count on from any number they will develop strategies for counting on in addition.

This task supports students in correctly writing numbers. Because students have to trace the number, instead of coloring in a bubble with the number in it or circling the correct number, they gain handwriting practice as well as counting and addition practice.

In this 6-lesson unit, students use dominoes to explore four models of addition: counting, number line, sets, and balanced equations. They learn about the commutative property, the relation between addition and subtraction, the result of adding 0, and the concept of doubles. Students write story problems which involve the operation of addition and begin to memorize the addition facts. They represent addition in pictures. The various models of addition help students develop a rich conceptual schema for addition. How many dots will be on the screen after the last bell? Through the use of videos and a couple of helpful clues, students are challenged to use counting, patterns, and algebraic thinking to determine how many dots (and even what colors!) will be on the screen (covered in the first Act) after the last bell.

In the four included games students construct groups of 5 objects, add groups of objects within 10, and identify and record numbers within 10. Auditory prompts support students with limited reading ability.

Teachers reads the story, Five Little Speckled Frogs, by Nikki Smith (published by Nikki Smith Books, 2006). Students explore counting to five using cubes.  This lesson helps build the concept of 5.  Appropriate for grades K and could also be used with 4K.

This game will reinforce number before and after as well as reading and sequencing numbers.

This intereactive Flash applet helps children learn grouping, tally marks, place value, addition, and subtraction. Students help the alien spaceship move cows into corrals by counting by 5s and 10s. They also can apply those grouping skills to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. Audio cues and prompts reinforce the user's actions and facilitate counting and the development of math language.

Up to this point in Grade K, students have worked intensively within 10 and have often counted to 30 using the Rekenrek during fluency practice. This work sets the stage for this module where students clarify the meaning of the 10 ones and some ones within a teen number and extend that understanding to count to 100.
