This unit contains two lessons which help students develop number sense through activities involving collection, representation, and analysis of data. Students also practice reading and writing large numbers and develop estimation skills. In Lesson 1, Every Breath You Take, students estimate the number of breaths taken during a specified time, experiment, and display real-life data. In Lesson 2, Making Your First Millions, students develop the concept of a million by working with smaller numerical units, such as blocks of 10 or 100, and then expanding the idea by multiplication or repeated addition. They analyze situations and identify patterns that will enable them to develop the concept of large numbers. Each lesson includes student activity sheets, an instructional plan, and extensions.

In this lesson, students find out how much money NFL cornerback Patrick Peterson lost by not cashing his signing bonus check of over \$15 million. Students start by guessing how much money he could have earned in interest if he had cashed the check right away. Then students are asked what information they need to know in order to solve the problem. A news article is given with extra information, and the equation for compound interest is used. Extension ideas are given to determine what the amount of money made would be for different amounts of time as well as a Desmos graphing exploration where students can change the rate and explore the amount of money that could be earned at different rates.

This lesson focuses learners on the concept of 1,000,000. It allows learners to see firsthand the sheer size of 1 million, while at the same time providing learners with an introduction to sampling and its use in mathematics. In this math activity, learners prepare jumping jack data to send to officials on the planet Jumpalot. Learners record how many jumping jacks they can do in ten seconds and use their knowledge of time conversions to figure out how many jumping jacks they could complete in a minute all the way to a year. Learners then organize group data and explore mean, median, and mode and the effects extreme values have on these measures. Finally, learners brainstorm the advantages and disadvantages each measure offers. This lesson guide includes questions for learners, assessment options, extensions, and reflection questions.

Information can be represented in many ways; this applet allows the user to represent data about the states using color. The state with the highest data value is darkest; other states are shaded proportionally. Several sets of data are already entered and available for examination: state population, land area, representatives in Congress, gasoline usage, and more. Users can eliminate the data from any state in order to note the consequences, or enter their own data. Students are introduced to the health risks caused by cooking and heating with inefficient cook stoves inside homes, a common practice in rural developing communities. Students simulate the cook stove scenario and use the engineering design process, including iterative trials, to increase warmth inside a building while reducing air quality problems. Students then collect and graph data, and analyze their findings.
