The Malaysia Sustainable Cities Practicum is an intensive field-based course that brings 15 Graduate / Professional students to Malaysia to learn about and analyze sustainable city development in five cities in Malaysia. The students in the Practicum will help determine the extent to which these efforts have been successful. They will identify specific projects or policy-making efforts that the following year’s cohort of International Visiting Scholars can examine more closely. Core subject for students majoring in management science. Surveys individual and social psychology and organization theory interpreted in the context of the managerial environment. Laboratory involves projects of an applied nature in behavioral science. Emphasizes use of behavioral science research methods to test hypotheses concerning organizational behavior. Instruction and practice in communication include report writing, team decision-making, and oral and visual presentation. Twelve units may be applied to the General Institute Laboratory Requirement.

In this three-lesson unit, students participate in activities in which they focus on connections between mathematics and children’s literature. Three pieces of literature are used to teach geometry and measurement topics in the mathematics curriculum, i.e. using and describing geometric figures, estimating the volume of an irregular solid, and exploring the need for a standard unit of length. Activity worksheets and ideas for extension are included.

In this unit plan students apply their knowledge of data collection, display, and analysis to create a plan for improving the environment. Each of the four lessons in this unit requires students to collect data about recyclable materials and display the data for analysis. Each lesson includes students worksheets (PDF), discussion questions, and extension ideas.

Extensive reading and discussion of case studies on educational technology that focuses on three areas: effective media design, relevant educational issues, and the existing and anticipated methods for distribution and the business concepts behind them. The primary case study is Star Festival, a multimedia curriculum about Japan that encourages users to explore issues of cultural and ethnic identity. Students expected to develop a project that shows an understanding of the types of business models that facilitate educational technology in the classroom. Graduate students are expected to explore the subject in greater depth. Taught in English.

In this series of three hands-on activities, students develop an understanding of the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents based upon models of hundredths. Each activity requires students to display their one hundred pieces of candy in a different way: linear model, grid model (rectangular area), and region model (circle graph/pie chart). This lesson includes student worksheets, assessment questions, extension suggestions, and a link to a circle graph tool.

This 4-lesson unit assumes student understanding of multiplication; it uses patterns, properties of the operation, and games to develop fact fluency. The unit included student recording sheets, questions for students and teachers, links to online applets, and suggestions for assessment and extension.

This workshop is designed to introduce students to different perspectives on international politics in the 21st century. Students will explore how advances in information technology are changing international relations and global governance through opening new channels of communication, creating new methods of education, and new potentials for democratization. We will consider the positive and negative externalities associated with applications of such technologies. Students will be encouraged to look at alternative futures, and/or to frame solutions to problems that they define. The class will include guest lectures, discussions, and a final project and presentation.

In this six lesson unit, students recognize and explore the relationships among pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They estimate and count sets of mixed coins, create equivalent sets, write story problems that involve money, and use coins to make patterns. In this Illuminations unit (three lessons), students formulate and refine questions that can be addressed by categorical data (Lesson 1) and numerical data (Lesson 2). They then collect, organize, and display with bar and circle graphs relevant data to answer those questions. They recognize the differences in analyzing categorical and numerical data. In the final lesson students identify examples of each type of data by looking at the question asked and discover the type of data collected determines the type of data display that is the most appropriate way of representing it. Students work with partners to collect data and create graphs for both types of data using the Data Grapher (cataloged separately).

This math meets ecology lesson provides hands-on experiences with mixing oil and water, provides surface area information about the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and gives learners opportunities to estimate small oil spills of their own making. This website by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality clearly explains the common communication barriers in a medical setting, along with techniques to overcome them. Language, hearing, and visual barriers can be overcome by visuals, video aids, written instructions, and medical interpreters. The website provides directions on how to facilitate conversation between the patient, medical professional, and translator. As an interactive activity, students should role-play how they would introduce each communication technique to a patient when there is a communication barrier. By reading and role-playing, students should feel confident communicating with patients through the use of communication aids.

This interactive pan balance allows students to enter numeric or algebraic expressions and investigate the important concept of equivalence as well as practice arithmetic and algebraic skills. Users place an expression in each of the red and blue pans. These expressions may or may not include the variable x. If the expression is algebraic, a value for x is entered or adjusted by moving the slider. As the value of x changes, the results will be weighed and graphed. Instructions and exploration directions and questions are included.

This Java tool is used to strengthen student understanding of equality and computation of numerical expressions. The applet also helps students understand that equality is a relationship, not an operation. After entering an expression in both the red and blue pan, the pans will move up and down depending on which expression is greater. When the expressions are equivalent, the pans will balance and the full equation will be entered into the Balanced Equations table. Instructions and exploration directions and questions are included.

This Java applet allows children to explore a balancing tool and thus build their algebraic thinking about equivalency. By placing shapes on each side of the balance and finding equivalent sets of weights, students discover the weight of each shape in one of six built-in sets or a random set.

In this unit, students investigate fractional parts of the whole and use translations, reflections, rotations, and line symmetry to make four-part quilt squares. Students have a practical context for using the mathematical terms associated with divisions of the square, transformations, and symmetries. Suggestions for implementation and extensions are included.

This five lesson Illuminations unit gives students an opportunity to create and analyze numeric and geometric patterns with particular emphasis on growing patterns. The lesson titles are respectively, What's Next?, Patterns On Charts, Growing Patterns, Exploring Other Number Patterns and Looking Back And Moving Forward. Each lesson includes learning objectives, material list, instructional plan, linked resources and assessment options.

Meets with CMS.850, but assignments differ. Philosophical analysis of film art, with an emphasis on the ways in which it creates meaning through techniques that define a formal structure. Particular focus on aesthetic problems about appearance and reality, literary and visual effects, communication and alienation through film technology.

In this lesson plan, students are asked to use measurement skills to perform an experiment. The data from the experiment is then recorded in a table and analyzed to determine the median and range.
