This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to use geometric properties to solve problems. In particular, the lesson will help you identify and help students who have the following difficulties: solving problems by determining the lengths of the sides in right triangles; and finding the measurements of shapes by decomposing complex shapes into simpler ones. The lesson unit will also help students to recognize that there may be different approaches to geometrical problems, and to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of those approaches.

This unit includes five nature journaling experiences implemented at High Marq Environmental Charter School during the 2021-22 school year. They are a bit of a grab bag in terms of subject and skills focus, but all included practices from How to Teach Nature Journaling by Emilie Lygren and John Muir Laws. Please Remix this template for your purposes.

This google slide show will be used by grade 1 teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. In this routine, "Close, Far, In Between" from Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics, Van de Walle focuses on number sense development and relative magnitude. Relative magnitude refers to the size relationship one number has with another. Three numbers are displayed for students to consider. These can be written on the board, chart paper, or shown using the document camera. Teachers display three numbers then ask a variety of questions prompting students to think about relative magnitude and build a more sophisticated understanding of our number system.

This google slide show will be used by first grade teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. Students should be given time to notice and wonder about each slide. Multiple opportunities to count objects exist within each slide's photo. The slides build upon the counting collections strategy, which involves multiple ways to count collections of physical objects.

This google slide show is for use with grade 1 students as a routine to build number sense. Strings of addition expressions are used to build connections and as a springboard for discussion. Each slide has a target addition strategy, though other strategies are encouraged as well.

This google slide show will be used by second grade teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. Directions for the teacher are found here. For quarter three, students will estimate using pictures with clues. Students should be given time to notice and wonder about each. Then, students can adjust their estimates as clues are revealed. Using a number line range is a good technique. This resource has been adapted from the work of Steve Wyborney.

In this 25-day Grade 2 module, students expand their skill with and understanding of units by bundling ones, tens, and hundreds up to a thousand with straws. Unlike the length of 10 centimeters in Module 2, these bundles are discrete sets. One unit can be grabbed and counted just like a banana?1 hundred, 2 hundred, 3 hundred, etc. A number in Grade 1 generally consisted of two different units, tens and ones. Now, in Grade 2, a number generally consists of three units: hundreds, tens, and ones. The bundled units are organized by separating them largest to smallest, ordered from left to right. Over the course of the module, instruction moves from physical bundles that show the proportionality of the units to non-proportional place value disks and to numerals on the place value chart.

In Module 3, students' understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This module marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades' centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra.

In this lesson plan students gather data about the items that they would normally throw in the trash. Once students collect the data they create a bar graph to display the number and kinds of materials they discard and then use this data to create a plan to reduce garbage and help the environment. The lesson plan includes an activity sheet (PDF) for graphing data and extension activity suggestions.

This intereactive Flash applet helps children learn grouping, tally marks, place value, addition, and subtraction. Students help the alien spaceship move cows into corrals by counting by 5s and 10s. They also can apply those grouping skills to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. Audio cues and prompts reinforce the user's actions and facilitate counting and the development of math language.
