Elementary Algebra is a work text that covers the traditional topics studied in a modern elementary algebra course. It is intended for students who (1) have no exposure to elementary algebra, (2) have previously had an unpleasant experience with elementary algebra, or (3) need to review algebraic concepts and techniques.

In this unit, students use online pan balances to study equality, order of operations, numerical and variable expressions, and other key algebraic concepts. Lessons focus on balancing shapes to study equality and equivalence; balancing algebraic understanding, to explore simplifying expressions; and balancing algebra, to determine if algebraic expressions are equal.

The rules of Krypto are amazingly simpleäóîcombine five numbers using the standard arithmetic operations to create a target number. Finding a solution to one of the more than 3 million possible combinations can be quite a challenge, but learners love it. This game helps to develop number sense, computational skill, and an understanding of the order of operations. Play this game online or use a deck of Krypto cards.

Students learn about four forms of equations: direct variation, slope-intercept form, standard form and point-slope form. They graph and complete problem sets for each, converting from one form of equation to another, and learning the benefits and uses of each.

This question examines the algebraic equations for three different spheres. The intersections of each pair of spheres are then studied, both using the equations and thinking about the geometry of the spheres. For two spheres where one is not contained inside of the other there are three possibilities for how they intersect.

A rigorous introduction designed for mathematicians into perturbative quantum field theory, using the language of functional integrals. Basics of classical field theory. Free quantum theories. Feynman diagrams. Renormalization theory. Local operators. Operator product expansion. Renormalization group equation. The goal is to discuss, using mathematical language, a number of basic notions and results of QFT that are necessary to understand talks and papers in QFT and string theory.

This google slide presentation is a collection of Steve Wyborney's SPLAT! routine, arranged in a sequence by weeks for use with grade 3. Students will work on subitizing, finding missing addends, and creating equations to represent their thinking.

Students will learn how to graph linear equations using slope-intercept form. To do this, they will graph a line with their bodies using a giant coordinate plane created on the classroom floor. Students will also practice graphing similar equations to improve on the skill.

This task is designed to make students think about the meaning of the quantities presented in the context and choose which ones are appropriate for the two different constraints presented. In particular, note that the purpose of the task is to have students generate the constraint equations for each part (though the problem statements avoid using this particular terminology), and not to have students solve said equations.

The lesson is 22 pages and about interpreting equations. It starts off with the mathematical goals and standards for the lesson. The resource is laid out with easy to follow instructions. There are various bolded titles starting with an introduction, materials needed, it gives a suggested lesson outline, along with practice examples. The resource uses black and red text to show the difference between what the teacher needs to do/say and wha the student needs to do.
In this unit plan, primary learners explore the five models of subtraction …
In this unit plan, primary learners explore the five models of subtraction (counting, sets, number line, balanced equations, and inverse of addition) using concrete (links), pictorial, and verbal representations to develop an understanding of symbolic notations. Students also investigate fact families, including those where one addend is 0 and where the addends are alike and also learn that the order (commutative) property) does not hold for subtraction. A brief bibliography of related books for children is provided. Instead of using hands on manipulatives and balances, links to Java applets: Pan Balance-Shapes and Pan Balance-Numbers ( both cataloged separately) are included. Instructional plan, questions for the students, assessment options, extensions, and teacher reflections are given for each lesson as well as links to down load all student resources.

All the activities in this lesson are addition and subtraction based. It is not designed to introduce addition and subtraction, rather, to supplement and enrich lessons already being taught. This lesson is not designed to be completed in one sitting. It may be done throughout an entire addition and subtraction unit. These activities may be used as starter activities when introducing new math concepts, particularly those that relate to addition and subtraction.

Using video segments and web interactives from Get the Math, students engage in an exploration of mathematics, specifically reasoning and sense making, to solve real world problems. In this lesson, students focus on understanding the Big Ideas of Algebra: patterns, relationships, equivalence, and linearity; learn to use a variety of representations, including modeling with variables; build connections between numeric and algebraic expressions; and use what they have learned previously about number and operations, measurement, proportionality, and discrete mathematics as applications of algebra. Methodology includes guided instruction, student-partner investigations, and communication of problem-solving strategies and solutions. In the Introductory Activity, students view a video segment in which they learn how Elton Brand, an accomplished basketball player, uses math in his work and are presented with a mathematical basketball challenge. In Learning Activity 1, students solve the challenge that Elton posed in the video, which involves using algebraic concepts and reasoning to figure out the maximum height the basketball reaches on its way into the basket by using three key variables and Elton Brand's stats. As students solve the problem, they have an opportunity to use an online simulation to find a solution. Students summarize how they solved the problem, followed by a viewing of the strategies and solutions used by the Get the Math teams. In Learning Activity 2, students try to solve additional interactive basketball (projectile motion) challenges. In the Culminating Activity, students reflect upon and discuss their strategies and talk about the ways in which algebra can be applied in the world of sports and beyond.
