Students will read an article online about the first four presidents. The online article provides scaffolds for vocabulary and reading. Students can use the online quiz to check for understanding. Students will then perform a close reading of the article following six text dependent questions. The lesson describes the activities along with the language to use for each of the questions.

The Reading Like a Historian curriculum turns students into historical investigators. The Lunchroom Fight lesson from the introduction will help students recognize skills of historical inquiry they already practice everyday, such as reconciling conflicting claims and evaluating the reliability of narrative accounts. Students will be asked to record details while considering point of view and offering support from the scenario to defend their observations.

The Text Evidence Analysis Scaffolded Writing Rubric was created for the CESA #1 EL OER Project. This rubric is aligned with 9th grade Common Core writing standards. It is an example of how teachers can create scaffolds using the WIDA CAN DO Descriptors. As a result, ELs of varying language levels will be able to successfully display their knowledge of the 9-12th grade Common Core writing standards.
