This will be a year-long lesson that is graded quarterly. Students will follow the 5S Lean workforce model daily when working in the shop areas. 5S stands for Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and sometimes a 6th S stands for Safety. This model will help students with daily reminders on how we should maintain the shop and perform in the shop.

In this unit, high school juniors will research one career of their choice, based on analysis of results of their three assessments on Career Cruising (Career Matchmaker, Ability Profiler and Learning Styles Inventory). In this process, students will develop the skills necessary to writing a high-quality, well-founded research paper. Topics will include source integrity, works cited pages (both formatting and the creation of citations for works cited page), the correct format for various in-text citations, stages of research, development of graphic organizers, translation of graphic organizer in the creation of an outline, transferring outline topics to paragraphs, developing strong introductory and concluding paragraphs, creating effective transition sentences, formatting cover pages, editing, revising, peer editing and submission of final draft.

Students will research a career of their choice and present information about their chosen career in the form of a wax museum where they dress like the people would in that career and report basic facts about the chosen career path, such as education, salaries, and daily activities.

Measurement and common math are required to perform your job duties in nearly every aspect of conveyor manufacturing. I have compiled a list of skills relating to math and measurement that are essential for successful job performance. This include being able to:

Read a tape measure accurately
Add or subtract fractions
Convert fractions to decimal form
Use a decimal equivalent card or chart (drill gage)

You will choose from list of jobs at Green Valley Dairy. Your work will include researching this career, interviewing personnel from Green Valley Dairy within these positions, and creating a presentation which you will share with class.

This series of activities in this unit provides background knowledge for students to ultimately understand the science of papermaking at a molecular level. These activities will include learning about carbohydrates, building models to demonstrate how polysaccharides form in condensation reactions, watching videos describing the general steps in the papermaking process, and learning about how additives to pulp can enhance the overall strength of a finished paper product. This knowledge will be used to provide the tools for students to explore papermaking in an inquiry-based format. Upon demonstration of the basics of making handmade paper with a papermaking kit, students will be challenged to change variables to determine which set of parameters results in the highest quality paper. This will truly be engineering design, but at the molecular level.

When talking to numerous departments at Reinhart Foodservice, all department heads emphasized the need for communication between departments and wanting to hire employees who possess excellent soft skills.

For this unit, students will complete a job experience, job shadow, or community service experience where they will observe communication at the workplace as well as note examples of soft skills in the workplace. Students will also explain how they used communication skills and soft skills. Finally, they will present their findings in a PowerPoint presentation.

This will be a 2-3 day lesson where a student will learn how to cut a slot for a keyway in a pulley, sprocket, or wheel.

Students use Google Docs to create a collage that communicates their self-knowledge and a vision for their future.

Students will choose an engineering sub-discipline of their choice and present information about it to their peers in a presentation style of their choice. The presentation must include some type of multimedia format (Powerpoint, Prezi, Slides, Keynote, etc.)

Students will increase their understanding of the forest as a renewable resource by learning about forest management techniques and developing a forestry management plan.

In an earlier lesson, students learned about the steel making and forging process. In this lesson, students will create a die using a 3D printer and then forge a part using play-dough. The lesson culmination will be a trip to the local business “Walker Forge” located in Clintonville, WI.

This Growth Mindset lesson was taught to all students in preparation for their start of the ACP process. The results showed that over 50% of our students tend toward a fixed mindset in their self-perceptions. This is used as a planning tool for future learning activities. and to introduce the concept of a growth mindset.
Three Key Points:

We are not one or the other – it’s a spectrum and situational.
Everyone is born with a Growth Mindset and all the brain power they need to learn everything that is required of them and to get as good as they want on things they want to do.
We can change mindsets by changing our beliefs and focus.

A main emphasis the Verso hiring department and department heads stressed was that students need to be aware of their social media presence. The impact of what they post could potentially help them gain employment or lose possible employment.

Having proper interview etiquette will give students an opportunity to excel during the interview process and provide the confidence required to succeed during an interview.

Most people don’t realize that manufacturing is all around them and that almost everything they use is manufactured. Students will be shown ores, steel billets, forged steel, and finished steel parts. Students will learn about how raw materials are mined and then transported from factory to factory in order to be turned into the products that are all around us.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” How many times does a young adult get asked this question? This is an important decision and definitely not an easy one. This lesson (semester project) allows the student to take a closer look at what they might enjoy as a career or more importantly – what they might discover isn’t what they want in a job!

Students will brainstorm a list of careers/jobs that may be available at a papermill. From that list they will then take 1 of those jobs and do an in depth study of one of those potential jobs/careers.

A specific skill that was shared by the Laboratory Scientist during the teacher externship experience at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital was the ability to use a bulb pipette accurately. In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice reading graduated marks on the side of a pipette and filling a pipette to several different requested levels.

A specific skill that was shared by the respiratory therapist during the teacher externship experience at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital was the ability to read a Broselow Pediatric Reference Tape accurately in an emergency situation. In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice using a Broselow Pediatric Reference Tape to measure a variety of “patients” and then apply that measurement correctly when answering associated questions.
