This collection of videos developed by the National Constitution Center and featuring distinguished scholars and museum experts focus on a wide variety of concepts related to the US Constitution and government. Videos could easily be utilized for a short "Constitution Day Lesson" or a more in-depth look at our founding documents. On Constitution Day, students will examine the role of the people in shaping the United States Constitution. First, students will respond to a provocative statement posted in the room. They will then watch a video that gives a brief explanation of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, or listen as the video transcript is read aloud. A Constitution poster is provided so students can examine Article VII and discuss it as a class.
The elementary and middle school educator will then
guide students through a read-aloud play depicting two Constitutional Convention delegates who disagreed about ratifying the Constitution.

This lesson explains the steps taken by the First Congress to name a president and vice president, to provide funding for the new government, to draft a bill of rights, and to organize the executive and judicial branches. When you complete this lesson, you should be able to explain how the Constitution provides an outline of the federal government’s organization and that details are added by the government itself. You should also be able to explain how the First Congress used the Constitution to name a president and vice president and raise revenue to fund the new government. You should be able to describe how Congress has organized the executive branch and how it has expanded. In addition, you should be able to describe how the Judiciary Act established the federal court system.
