This resource could be used an a precurser for a lesson on comparing areas of circles and squares. There is guess and check involved, as well as digging deeper to find the correct answer. Students could do part of this on their own device, using GeoGebra to help with graphing the equations. If students do not have access to devices, then the teacher can use it as a class discussion.

This includes questions that can be posed to students, as well as visuals to make the entire task make sense to students. Answer is included.

This applet allows students to investigate the relationships between the area and circumference of a circle and its radius and diameter. There are three sections to the site: Intro, Investigation, and Problems. In the Intro section, students can manipulate the size of a circle and see how the radius, diameter, and circumference are affected. Students can also play movie clip to visually see how these measurements are related. The Investigation section allows students to collect data points by dragging the circle radius to various lengths, and adding and recording the data to a table which records the radius, diameter, circumference and area. Clicking on the x/y button allows students to examine the relationship between any two measures. Clicking on the graph button will take students to a graph of the data. They can plot any of the four measures on the x-axis against any of the four measures on the y-axis. The Problems section contains questions for students to solve and record their answers in the correct unit.

The Circle and The Line

Although this task is fairly straightforward, it is worth noticing that it does not explicitly tell students to look for intersection points when they graph the circle and the line. Thus, in addition to assessing whether they can solve the system of equations, it is assessing a simple but important piece of conceptual understanding, namely the correspondence between intersection points of the two graphs and solutions of the system.

This task shows that the three perpendicular bisectors of the sides of a triangle all meet in a point, using the characterization of the perpendicular bisector of a line segment as the set of points equidistant from the two ends of the segment. The point so constructed is called the circumcenter of the triangle.

This group of activities, tasks, videos, and lessons allowed me to reinforce the classification of quadrilaterals. I used this lesson in my math intervention grouping of seventh graders that were struggling with Geometry shapes. There is a variety of ways to reinforce the skill while students were very engaged. The sites were really easy to share with the ease linking to Google Classroom.
