Module 1 of the Kindergarten curriculum in A Story of Units.  In Topics A and B, classification activities allow students to analyze and observe their world and articulate their observations.  Reasoning and dialogue begin immediately.  In Topics C, D, E, and F, students order, count, and write up to ten objects to answer “how many?” questions from linear, to array, to circular, and finally to scattered configurations wherein they must devise a path through the objects as they count.  In Topics G and H, students use their understanding of relationships between numbers and know that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one greater and that the number before is one less.

This lesson introduces students to the measurable attribute of length and provides practice in measuring length using non-standard units. The lesson is launched using the story Ladybug on the Move by Richard Fowler. Lesson objectives, teaching ideas, and handouts are included.

In this unit of 8 lessons, students make groups of zero to 10 objects, learn number names for the groups, compose and decompose numbers, and practice writing numerals to record the size of a group. In this lesson students find and record addends that sum to ten in three different activities, using ten frames, linking cubes, two-sided counters, and a concentration game. In this six lesson unit, students recognize and explore the relationships among pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They estimate and count sets of mixed coins, create equivalent sets, write story problems that involve money, and use coins to make patterns. This interactive Flash game helps students practice counting, subitizing, and grouping by 10s, as they transport Okta the Octopus and his friends to a safe ocean. The goal is to select given numbers of Oktas as quickly as possible before the timer runs out. Then users count the total number of Oktas "saved" and identify that number on a number line. Students choose from three levels of difficulty, which vary according to time limit, range of target numbers, and whether visual target cues appear. These settings are customizable. Users who count incorrectly are given the option of visual help in recounting.

In this lesson plan students must create their own method for keeping track of rubber ducks found around the classroom. Students are then given an opportunity to share their data collection strategies and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each one. The lesson plan is written to make an easy tie in to language arts by incorporting discussion of the words "in" or "on" when discussing the ducks location.
