In this online version of the popular card game, students combine five given number cards, using the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), to arrive at a target number. This version uses the numbers 1–10 only. Users may ask for a hint or view a possible solution, although there are often multiple solutions.

Students apply what they have learned about the engineering design process to a real-life problem that affects them and/or their school. They chose a problem as a group, and then follow the engineering design process to come up with and test their design solution. This activity teaches students how to use the engineering design process while improving something in the school environment that matters to them. By performing each step of the design process, students can experience what it is like to be an engineer.

Students learn about the concept of pushing, as well as the relationship between force and mass. Students practice measurement skills using pan scales and rulers to make predictions about mass and distance. A LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robot is used to test their hypotheses. By the end of the activity, students have a better understanding of robotics, mass and friction and the concept of predicting.

Students analyze a cartoon of a Rube Goldberg machine and a Python programming language script to practice engineering analysis. In both cases, they study the examples to determine how the different systems operate and the function of each component. This exercise in juxtaposition enables students to see the parallels between a more traditional mechanical engineering design and computer programming. Students also gain practice in analyzing two very different systems to fully understand how they work, similar to how engineers analyze systems and determine how they function and how changes to the system might affect the system.

Working in small groups, students complete and run functioning Python codes. They begin by determining the missing commands in a sample piece of Python code that doubles all the elements of a given input and sums the resulting values. Then students modify more advanced Python code, which numerically computes the slope of a tangent line by finding the slopes of progressively closer secant lines; to this code they add explanatory comments to describe the function of each line of code. This requires students to understand the logic employed in the Python code. Finally, students make modifications to the code in order to find the slopes of tangents to a variety of functions.

This interactive Java application helps students understand the partial quotients algorithm of division in the context of dividing food equally. Students select a character and a type of food as well as the quantities of characters (divisor, 1-50) and food (dividend, 1-500) – or have the applet make selections randomly. The applet creates a story problem and leads users through the algorithm one step at a time, using questions related to the meaning of each step, and displays graphics illustrating the steps. Remainders can be expressed as whole numbers or fractions. An online calculator is available to help with calculations.

This lesson is intended to help you assess how well students are able to:
Articulate verbally the relationships between variables arising in everyday contexts.Translate between everyday situations and sketch graphs of relationships between variables.Interpret algebraic functions in terms of the contexts in which they arise.Reflect on the domains of everyday functions and in particular whether they should be discrete or continuous.
The lesson includes a pre-assessment activity.  The lesson is designed for students to work in small groups on a collaborative task, matching situations, sketch graphs, and algebraic functions. They refine the graphs and interpret the formulas to answer questions. Students then discuss as a whole-class what has been learned and the strategies used.  Finally, a follow-up post-assessment is included and similar to the pre-assessment to use what they have learned.

In this math meets physics game, learners pretend they are pilots of rescue helicopters and must fly their helicopters to the top of a mountain to rescue lost hikers. Learners first explore the four forces of flight: lift, drag, thrust, and weight. Before playing the game, learners conduct a probability experiment with spinners and record their results in tally tables and bar graphs. They then use their findings to select spinners with the greatest probability of helping them win the game. In a portion of the game, learners use ordered pairs to plot points on the coordinate plane to show their flight path.

Introduction to the theoretical and practical sides of public policy controversies and their resolution. Offers a multidisciplinary perspective on a wide range of difficult public policy disputes including racial and ethnic conflict, resource management disputes, and science-intensive policy disagreements such as those surrounding the disposal of nuclear waste, the nature of the risks associated with resource recovery plants, and the cultural impacts of hydroelectric development. Simulations, case studies, and role plays provide numerous opportunities for students to develop their own dispute handling capabilities.

Students solidify their understanding of the terms "circumference" and "rotation" through the use of LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robotics components. They measure the circumference of robot wheels to determine how far the robot can travel during one rotation of an NXT motor. They sharpen their metric system measurement skills by precisely recording the length of a wheel's circumference in centimeters, as well as fractions of centimeters. Through this activity, students practice brainstorming ways to solve a problem when presented with a given scenario, improve their ability to measure and record lengths to different degrees of precision, and become familiar with common geometric terms (such as perimeter and rotation).

Students are then given an opportunity to share their data collection strategies and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each one. The lesson plan is written to make an easy tie in to language arts by incorporting discussion of the words "in" or "on" when discussing the ducks location. PDF documents for cut out rubber ducks, data collection assessment, and answer key are provided.
