This unit consists of four lessons in which students explore several meanings and representations of multiplication, including number lines, sets, arrays, and balance beams. They also learn about the commutative property of multiplication, the results of multiplying by 1 and by 0, and the inverse property of multiplication. Students write story problems and create pictographs. The unit includes activity sheets, assessment ideas, links to related applets, reflective questions for students and teachers, extensions and a bibliography of children's literature with a multiplication focus.

Similar to the organization of Module 1, the introduction of new factors in Module 3 spreads across topics. This allows students to build fluency with facts involving a particular unit before moving on. The factors are sequenced to facilitate systematic instruction with increasingly sophisticated strategies and patterns.

KenKen is a puzzle game that helps students develop whole number calculation skills, logical thinking and perseverance. Users complete the interactive grid with the digits 1-4 (or 1-6) so that each digit appears exactly once in each row or column, while also forming a target number using a specific operation. This page provides four new KenKen puzzles daily with a range of difficulty. Each puzzle includes instructions, rules, and a print option.

This game is a fun way for the student to practice arithmetic skills to the point where the single-digit facts are committed to memory. It reinforces the relationship between multiplication and division, and depending on the target cards can also connect these recall skills with other skills such as estimation and understanding of properties. The only necessary materials, the cards, can be produced easily and can be re-used.  After playing regularly, students could be engaged in making new target cards.

This 4-lesson unit assumes student understanding of multiplication; it uses patterns, properties of the operation, and games to develop fact fluency. This interactive notebook is a great introduction to multiplication and division using the Common core standards. Students enjoy usingthe Smartboard and recording the information in the msth journals.

Students decompose 2-digit numbers, model area representations using the distributive property and partial product arrays, and align paper-and-pencil calculations with the arrays.
