Elapsed Time: Using a Timeline to Determine Elapsed Time

This lesson explores elapsed time through the use of timelines. Students will use timelines to mark start times and end times of given activities, and will interpret the timelines to understand how to calculate elapsed time.  With the exception of the Timeline Activity Sheet, you will want to make sure that each student has one copy of each activity sheet. Make multiple copies of the Timeline Activity Sheet so that each student can have at least 3 copies.

Module 2 uses place value to unify measurement, rounding skills, and the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.  The module begins with plenty of hands-on experience using a variety of tools to build practical measurement skills and conceptual understanding of metric and time units.  Estimation naturally surfaces through application; this transitions students into rounding.  In the module’s final topics students round to assess whether or not their solutions to problems solved using the standard algorithms are reasonable.

In this 5-lesson multi-media unit, students will explore various real-world applications of different forms of measurement, including time and distance. They will make estimations and calculations. Throughout the unit, students will be using online resources to familiarize themselves with coral reefs, the nation of Belize, and to plan a pretend scuba diving trip. Telling time - Time Travel Game

This is a telling time game that has multiple levels.  It has a practice session that shows the students how to play the game.  Then it begins the game with level 1 which is telling time to the hour.  It goes up 4 levels. Students are asked to choose an analog or digit clock.  They are given a time, and then they are asked to move the clock to show that time.  I would use this game to reinforce what students have already learned about telling time.  It would be good for students who are struggling, or for students that are ready to move to the next level.
