Math Modeling: Making Picture Frames

Mathematical modeling has the potential to “re-humanize” mathematics (Gutierrez, 2018) by providing students opportunities to make mathematical connections to themselves and the world around them.  The Making Picture Frames  project emphasizes a culturally responsive approach to math modeling instruction. By tapping into students’ funds of knowledge and diverse mathematical thinking; opening access to high cognitive demand activities with high supports; and promoting collaboration and collective action to solve problems, mathematical modeling provides an enriching space for students and their teachers to thrive.  We used the Mathematizing the World routine to promote critical thinking as students worked together to analyze and solve real world situations that lead to a Making Task in which students had to figure out how many popsicle sticks were needed so that our class could make picture frames for our caregiver.   This lesson and routines were modified from EQSTEMM resources https://www.eqstemm.org/home

In this lesson,  students will learn about what nutrition requirements a school needs to abide by for snacks and drinks for a middle school vending machine.  Learners will work together to come up with additional options that are cheaper and healther for a local middle school's vending machine.  By engageing in a decision matrix, one new snack and one new drink will presented to the principal.

Mathematical modeling has the potential to “re-humanize” mathematics (Gutierrez, 2018) by providing students opportunities to make mathematical connections to themselves and the world around them. Popcorn Anyone?

The Popcorn Anyone project emphasizes a culturally responsive approach to math modeling instruction. This allows students to apply their diverse mathematical thinking and knowledge to real-life situations. The 7th and 8th-grade students were starting a popcorn microeconomy. They needed to problem-solve and decide how much popcorn would be needed to feed 200 students. This project includes the Mathematizing the World routine and the Know and Need to Know routine to promote critical thinking as students worked together to analyze and solve real-world situations. This led to a Making Task where students had to figure out how much popcorn was needed to feed 200 people
