Students decompose 2-digit numbers, model area representations using the distributive property and partial product arrays, and align paper-and-pencil calculations with the arrays. The lessons provide conceptual understanding of what occurs in a 2-digit multiplication problem. Partial product models serve as transitions to understanding the standard multiplication algorithm.

English Description:
In Module 3, students' understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This module marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades' centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra.

English Description:
In this 25-day Grade 2 module, students expand their skill with and understanding of units by bundling ones, tens, and hundreds up to a thousand with straws. Unlike the length of 10 centimeters in Module 2, these bundles are discrete sets. One unit can be grabbed and counted just like a banana?1 hundred, 2 hundred, 3 hundred, etc. A number in Grade 1 generally consisted of two different units, tens and ones. Now, in Grade 2, a number generally consists of three units: hundreds, tens, and ones. The bundled units are organized by separating them largest to smallest, ordered from left to right. Over the course of the module, instruction moves from physical bundles that show the proportionality of the units to non-proportional place value disks and to numerals on the place value chart.

In this six lesson unit, students recognize and explore the relationships among pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They estimate and count sets of mixed coins, create equivalent sets, write story problems that involve money, and use coins to make patterns. Within the unit there is a link to US Mint. http://www.usmint.gov/kids/teachers/

In this Illuminations unit (three lessons), students formulate and refine questions that can be addressed by categorical data (Lesson 1) and numerical data (Lesson 2). They then collect, organize, and display with bar and circle graphs relevant data to answer those questions. They recognize the differences in analyzing categorical and numerical data. In the final lesson students identify examples of each type of data by looking at the question asked and discover the type of data collected determines the type of data display that is the most appropriate way of representing it. Students work with partners to collect data and create graphs for both types of data using the Data Grapher (cataloged separately).

This interactive Flash game helps students practice counting, subitizing, and grouping by 10s, as they transport Okta the Octopus and his friends to a safe ocean. The goal is to select given numbers of Oktas as quickly as possible before the timer runs out. Then users count the total number of Oktas "saved" and identify that number on a number line. Students choose from three levels of difficulty, which vary according to time limit, range of target numbers, and whether visual target cues appear. These settings are customizable. Users who count incorrectly are given the option of visual help in recounting.
