This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to understand what the different algebraic forms of a quadratic function reveal about the properties of its graphical representation. In particular, the lesson will help teachers identify and help students who have the following difficulties: understanding how the factored form of the function can identify a graphŐs roots; understanding how the completed square form of the function can identify a graphŐs maximum or minimum point; and understanding how the standard form of the function can identify a graphŐs intercept.

This unit from Illuminations consists of five lessons designed to help students understand fractions when they are represented as a part of a region. Learners investigate relationships between parts and wholes, the relative value of the fraction based on the pattern block shape and equivalency while working with physical and/or virtual pattern blocks. Instructional plan, questions for the students, assessment options, extensions, and teacher reflections are given for each lesson.

This lesson unit is intended to help you assess how well students working with square numbers are able to: choose an appropriate, systematic way to collect and organize data, examining the data for patterns; describe and explain findings clearly and effectively; generalize using numerical, geometrical, graphical and/or algebraic structure; and explain why certain results are possible/impossible, moving towards a proof.

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to use geometric properties to solve problems. In particular, the lesson will help you identify and help students who have the following difficulties: solving problems by determining the lengths of the sides in right triangles; and finding the measurements of shapes by decomposing complex shapes into simpler ones. The lesson unit will also help students to recognize that there may be different approaches to geometrical problems, and to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of those approaches.

This google slide show will be used by grade 1 teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. In this routine, "Close, Far, In Between" from Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics, Van de Walle focuses on number sense development and relative magnitude. Relative magnitude refers to the size relationship one number has with another. Three numbers are displayed for students to consider. These can be written on the board, chart paper, or shown using the document camera. Teachers display three numbers then ask a variety of questions prompting students to think about relative magnitude and build a more sophisticated understanding of our number system.

The images on this google slide show are best used in the context of a number talk where children are gathered in a common space and know the routine of sharing thoughts and ideas. Teachers use talk moves to keep the dialogue going among and between student, focusing on mathematical ideas and vocabulary found within the images. The teacher’s role is to facilitate the conversation, allowing a forum for the sharing of important ideas.

In this 25-day Grade 2 module, students expand their skill with and understanding of units by bundling ones, tens, and hundreds up to a thousand with straws. Unlike the length of 10 centimeters in Module 2, these bundles are discrete sets. One unit can be grabbed and counted just like a banana?1 hundred, 2 hundred, 3 hundred, etc. A number in Grade 1 generally consisted of two different units, tens and ones. Now, in Grade 2, a number generally consists of three units: hundreds, tens, and ones. The bundled units are organized by separating them largest to smallest, ordered from left to right. Over the course of the module, instruction moves from physical bundles that show the proportionality of the units to non-proportional place value disks and to numerals on the place value chart.
