This interactive Flash applet helps students develop number sense and fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 10. Okta hides some bubbles under a shell, and then either adds more bubbles or takes some away. Students determine how many bubbles are left under the shell. Users can choose a specific one-digit starting number or let the applet choose randomly. Users can select addition, subtraction or both.
This 5-lesson unit is intended to help children who already understand the meanings of addition to develop fluency with addition facts. The activities and games take advantage of commutativity, the additive identity, doubles, and number patterns to develop operation sense and foster retention. Making a 10 provides a technique to help students master single digit addition. The task is designed to help students visualize where the 10's are on a single digit addition table and explain why this is so. This knowledge can then be used to help them learn the addition table.

In this six lesson unit, students recognize and explore the relationships among pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. They estimate and count sets of mixed coins, create equivalent sets, write story problems that involve money, and use coins to make patterns. In this math lesson, learners practice addition facts (with sums of 5, 6, 7, and 8) in a concentration-game format using dominoes. Then, learners generate sums of given numbers using a calculator, record the sums on a hundreds chart and look for patterns. This lesson guide includes questions for learners, assessment options, extensions, and reflection questions.
Thinking about numbers using frames of 10 can be a helpful way to learn basic number facts. The four games that can be played with this applet help to develop counting and addition skills. (This applet works well when used in conjunction with the Five Frame applet.)
In this math lesson, learners listen to a poem about money from Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and examine a quarter. Learners find sets of coins equivalent to a quarter using pennies, nickels and dimes. Learners also estimate and count coin collections and count by fives and tens using actual and online calculators and pose and answer coin puzzles.
This unit is a Math Routine to use with a Literacy Unit about The Three Little Pigs. I included student work and projects. I created this slideshow to share with the students as we went through each routine. The routines revolve around the construction of houses. This was used in a first-grade classroom. The students persevered to solve the Lego brick problem although it may have been more difficult than first-grade standards.
