Stats and Probability at BPM (Quality Control/paper weight)
Title: Stats and Probaility at BPM | Author: Mr. Andrew M. Kaufman |
Subject(s): Math | |
Grade Level(s): 6th-11th grade | Total Time: 45 minute |
Overview / Description: This Lesson Plan goes over how to find the Mean, Median, Mode, IQR, and Mean Absolute Deviation of a data set. We will go over some generic examples in the lesson and then do some practical application, as we find each of these from the samples taken to ensure consistent weight of the paper from BPM.
Learning goals/objectives:
After completing this activity, students should be able to
1: Understand the difference between the measures of center and measures of variability.
2: Find/Calculate the Mean, Median, Mode, IQR, and Mean Absolute Deviation
Workplace Readiness Skill:
Social Skills | Communication |
||
Teamwork | × | Critical Thinking
Attitude and Initiative | × | Planning and Organization
Professionalism | Media Etiquette |
Content Standards:
6.SP.A.3
Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
6.SP.B.5.c
Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered.
Educational Frameworks: B-LS 1. Demonstrate critical-thinking skills to make informed decisions
Materials: The notes and assignment questions are all attached below (5 page document: first 3 pages are notes and last two pages are the assignment)
Learning Activities: I have a couple of video clips to introduce the homework assignment and give rational for the use of mathematics in the real world. Then the lesson goes into vocabulary and a few examples. Then there are two pages of practice for students to demonstrate their understanding of the content.
WHO (T=Teacher Focus Lesson; WG=Whole Group\; SM=Small Group; I=Independent)
Learning Activity Task | WHO is responsible for this step? | Approximate time for task |
Introduce the lesson by watching videos (links in the notes) and reading the first paragraphs. | T | 5 min |
Complete the vocabulary and notes This can be teacher led, or students can search for definitions and complete the vocab before the Teacher led notes. | T/WG/SM/I | 30 minutes |
Practice/Homework: Once the vocabulary and notes are completed, students should demonstrate their understanding by completing the assignment correctly. Whatever is not completed in class can be completed for tomorrow. | I/SM | 15-20 minutes |
Assessment: Can students find the Mean, Median, Mode, IQR, and Mean Absolute Deviation of a data set? (pages 4 and 5 of the attached document)
Wrap-Up: N/A or going over the homework
Extension Activity (for intervention or enrichment): N/A
ATTACHMENTS : Attached below is the notes and assessment of understanding as well.
