This is a resource that includes essays curated from some excellent open composition texts online. We curated these resources to meet the needs of students in Introduction to College Composition courses at UW-Madison. This is an expanding resource, and I welcome suggestions for strong, openly-licensed fiction and nonfiction essays to include in this text! The essays in this text come from a range of sources, so the licensing permissions differ essay to essay. Clinical Procedures for Safer Patient Care

This open educational resource (OER) was developed to ensure best practice and quality care based on the latest evidence, and to address inconsistencies in how clinical health care skills are taught and practised in the clinical setting. The checklist approach, used in this textbook, aims to provide standardized processes for clinical skills and to help nursing schools and clinical practice partners keep procedural practice current. Each skill/procedure is covered in a chapter that has learning objectives, a brief overview of the relevant theory, checklists of steps for procedures with the rationale behind each step of the process, and a summary of key takeaways. Key terms are set in bold throughout the book and laid out again in a Glossary in the appendix. All 88 checklists are also summarized, and hyperlinked to the original checklist, in the appendix.

ARISE Scenarios

150 low- and high-fidelity simulations and serious games scenarios created for Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, EMT-Paramedic, Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician programs. Nursing scenarios are aligned with WTCS Statewide Nursing Curriculum. Simulation documents can be used as standalone scenarios or as augmented reality scenarios using the free, open source iOS "ARIS" app on iPads. Web Literacy for Student Fact Checkers

This is an unabashedly practical guide for the student fact-checker. It supplements generic information literacy with the specific web-based techniques that can get you closer to the truth on the web more quickly. We will show you how to use date filters to find the source of viral content, how to assess the reputation of a scientific journal in less than five seconds, and how to see if a tweet is really from the famous person you think it is or from an impostor. We’ll show you how to find pages that have been deleted, figure out who paid for the web site you’re looking at, and whether the weather portrayed in that viral video actual matches the weather in that location on that day. We’ll show you how to check a Wikipedia page for recent vandalism, and how to search the text of almost any printed book to verify a quote. We’ll teach you to parse URLs and scan search result blurbs so that you are more likely to get to the right result on the first click. And we’ll show you how to avoid baking confirmation bias into your search terms.

Process of Science Companion Vol. 1 – Scientific Writing Manual

This Scientific Writing Manual guides students through the process of writing a college-level lab report, poster presentation, and other assignments specific to the UW-Madison Biocore program. This is the first component of what will soon be a three-part textbook called The Process of Science Companion. (Please stay tuned for the expanded and updated textbook link once the statistics primer and additional resources are also complete!) Because students are often able to learn about genre conventions more effectively when they have models to refer to, Dr. Batzli and Dr. Harris also include annotated examples of strong student writing. They also provide models of weak hypotheses, titles, and other forms of writing and outline how to make them stronger. Excerpts from this writing manual may be of use to students in courses outside of UW-Madison Biocore program. The assignment descriptions and rubrics may be useful for instructors who are looking for materials to adapt to their own teaching contexts.
