This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students can: Understand the concepts of length and area; use the concept of area in proving why two areas are or are not equal; and construct their own examples and counterexamples to help justify or refute conjectures.

This is a task from the Illustrative Mathematics website that is one part of a complete illustration of the standard to which it is aligned. Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: Rhianna has learned the SSS and SAS congruence tests for triangles and she wonders if these tests might work for parallelograms. Suppose $ABCD$ and $EF...

Geometry Module 1: Congruence, Proof, and Constructions

Module 1 embodies critical changes in Geometry as outlined by the Common Core. The heart of the module is the study of transformations and the role transformations play in defining congruence. The topic of transformations is introduced in a primarily experiential manner in Grade 8 and is formalized in Grade 10 with the use of precise language. The need for clear use of language is emphasized through vocabulary, the process of writing steps to perform constructions, and ultimately as part of the proof-writing process.

Midpoints of the Sides of a Paralellogram

This is a reasonably direct task aimed at having students use previously-derived results to learn new facts about parallelograms, as opposed to deriving them from first principles. The solution provided (among other possibilities) uses the SAS trial congruence theorem, and the fact that opposite sides of parallelograms are congruent.

I use this activity as an introduction to our quadrilaterals chapter.

In this activity, students will discover the properties of quadrilaterals by looking at that different shapes and marking which quadrilaterals have specific properties.

Students that are struggling with identifying the properties I give them the "Quadrilaterals Properties" handout printed in color since the properties each have a different color.

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to identify and use geometrical knowledge to solve a problem. In particular, this unit aims to identify and help students who have difficulty in: making a mathematical model of a geometrical situation; drawing diagrams to help with solving a problem; identifying similar triangles and using their properties to solve problems; and tracking and reviewing strategic decisions when problem-solving.
