In this 25-day Grade 2 module, students expand their skill with and understanding of units by bundling ones, tens, and hundreds up to a thousand with straws. Unlike the length of 10 centimeters in Module 2, these bundles are discrete sets. One unit can be grabbed and counted just like a banana?1 hundred, 2 hundred, 3 hundred, etc. A number in Grade 1 generally consisted of two different units, tens and ones. Now, in Grade 2, a number generally consists of three units: hundreds, tens, and ones. The bundled units are organized by separating them largest to smallest, ordered from left to right. Over the course of the module, instruction moves from physical bundles that show the proportionality of the units to non-proportional place value disks and to numerals on the place value chart.

This intereactive Flash applet helps children learn grouping, tally marks, place value, addition, and subtraction. Students help the alien spaceship move cows into corrals by counting by 5s and 10s. They also can apply those grouping skills to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. This interactive Flash game helps students practice counting, subitizing, and grouping by 10s, as they transport Okta the Octopus and his friends to a safe ocean. The goal is to select given numbers of Oktas as quickly as possible before the timer runs out. Then users count the total number of Oktas "saved" and identify that number on a number line. Students choose from three levels of difficulty, which vary according to time limit, range of target numbers, and whether visual target cues appear. These settings are customizable. Users who count incorrectly are given the option of visual help in recounting.

In this unit, students integrate their understanding of skip counting by 5s and 10s to support telling and writing time to the nearest five minutes. They expand their prior knowledge of telling time to the nearest half hour, hour, and counting by tens to include counting by fives. Applying the knowledge of counting by fives and tens to the clock equips students to be successful in the real-life situation of telling time.

Students will learn/review skip counting by 5's, 10's and 100's. Following review, students will practice counting by 5's, 10's and 100's.
