In this 8-lesson unit students use buttons to explore logical and numerical relationships that form the conceptual basis for understanding addition and subtraction operations. Topics include counting, ordinal numbers (and relative position), classification (attributes), relationships between numbers, addition of sets, commutativity of addition, sums to 10, fact families (including subtraction), three models of subtraction ("take away", comparative, missing addend), and bar graphs. However I did an extension off this lesson using this resource to allow teachers to work on the skills of addition, the precise language of tens and some extra ones, and seeing groups of ten.

This activity is a great way to include Language Arts along with Mathematics. Using The Very Hungry Catepillar, we used based-ten blocks to place onto a ten frames. Each time the catepillar eats something, we add to the ten frame. At the end of the story, we look at how much the catepillar has eaten. However, I took this activity a step further to continue strengthening the use of addition. Students and I then had a variety of situations at the end of the story where the catepillar ate 4 more leaves. The students then add four more, either in a group of 4 or counting out 4 individual items. We then look again at using our language of, "I have a 3 groups of ten and 4 extra ones."

Challenges with this lesson is making sure the students have added a cube onto their ten frame for each item they ate. As well, students would have to also understand how to use a ten frame before the start of the lesson. As well, if you are working to be precise with the language of tens and extra ones, you want to nudge your students to use this language. You will want to model this multiple times.

In this 6-lesson unit, students explore 5 models of subtraction (counting, sets, number line, balanced equations, and inverse of addition) using connecting cubes. The lesson activities focus on the comparative mode of subtraction as children investigate the relationship between addition and subtraction, write story problems in which comparison is required, and practice the subtraction facts. The lessons include printable student activity sheets, a bibliography of children's counting books, questions for student discussion and teacher reflection, assessment options, extensions, and links to online applets (cataloged separately).

This resource is a lesson introducing and/or reinforcing the mathematical concept of counting on and counting back.  The teacher uses a counting book of their choice or you can choose from the bibliography list provided on the website.  As the teacher reads, the students use counting cubes to count on or count back depending on the book chosen.  Students display their cubes both horizontally and vertically and then record their answers horizontally and vertically.

In this 6-lesson unit, students use dominoes to explore four models of addition: counting, number line, sets, and balanced equations. They learn about the commutative property, the relation between addition and subtraction, the result of adding 0, and the concept of doubles. Students write story problems which involve the operation of addition and begin to memorize the addition facts. They represent addition in pictures. The various models of addition help students develop a rich conceptual schema for addition. Included are a Bibliography of Counting Books, student materials, questions for student and teacher reflection, assessment and extension ideas. Students can use this interactive Flash applet to practice subitizing and counting groups of objects, to understand the importance of 5 in our base-10 number system, and to learn basic addition facts. In the four included games students construct groups of 5 objects, add groups of objects within 10, and identify and record numbers within 10. Auditory prompts support students with limited reading ability.

Represent put together situations with number bonds. Count on from one embedded number or part to totals of 6 and 7 and generate all addition expressions for each total.

Solve add to with result unknown and put together with result unknown math stories by drawing, writing equations, and making statements of the solution.

This google slide show will be used by first grade teachers with their students as a numeracy routine. Students will use a google slide presentation to subitize, compose, and decompose numbers presented as quick dot images.

This intereactive Flash applet helps children learn grouping, tally marks, place value, addition, and subtraction. Students help the alien spaceship move cows into corrals by counting by 5s and 10s. They also can apply those grouping skills to practice adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. Audio cues and prompts reinforce the user's actions and facilitate counting and the development of math language.

This 5-lesson unit is intended to help children who already understand the meanings of addition to develop fluency with addition facts. The activities and games take advantage of commutativity, the additive identity, doubles, and number patterns to develop operation sense and foster retention.
