This Desmos activity walks students through the addition of integers by starting with balancing values.  The activity is interactive and allows students to work at their own pace.  About half way through there's a reflection question which encourages math discourse.  This was a great introductory lesson that encouraged my students to think without reaching levels of frustration.  Towards the end it also challenges students to analyze statements made by the Desmos characters, reaching a new level on the depths of knowledge wheel.

The rules of Krypto are amazingly simpleäóîcombine five numbers using the standard arithmetic operations to create a target number. Finding a solution to one of the more than 3 million possible combinations can be quite a challenge, but learners love it. This game helps to develop number sense, computational skill, and an understanding of the order of operations. Play this game online or use a deck of Krypto cards.

In this online version of the popular card game, students combine five given number cards, using the four arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), to arrive at a target number. This version uses the numbers 1–10 only. Users may ask for a hint or view a possible solution, although there are often multiple solutions.

The aim of this lesson is to help students learn the process of subtracting integers through a real world discovery activity. By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
Discover a rule for subtraction integersApply the rule they discover to subtract integers with like signsApply the rule they discover to subtract integers with different signs
Students use double sided chips to manipulate "cold cubes" and "hot cubes" in order to solve the "Chefs Amazing Soup" problem. Students are asked to add and/or remove "cold cubes" and "hot cubes" to adjust the temperature of the soup and discover rules for subtracting integers in the process.

Positive and negative numbers become more than marks on paper when learners play this variation of the card game, Rummy. Engaged in a game involving both strategy and luck, learners build understanding of additive inverses, adding integers, and absolute value. This lesson guide includes questions for learners, assessment options, extensions, and reflection questions.
