A set of eight photographs compiled into a series of slides explain how urban areas are facing challenges in keeping both their infrastructure and their residents cool as global temperatures rise. Chicago is tackling that problem with a green design makeover. This report is part of PBS's Coping with Climate Change series and could challenge students to consider engineering designs to help their own cities be greener.

In this lesson, students will use a PBS NewsHour segment to better understand the tactics of disinformation, then learn about and practice geolocation skills to evaluate viral misinformation in an online activity.

Every election year and for years after elections, there are several major issues that persistently trouble Americans. Every election year, politicians pledge that they will address these issues, and nearly every year they fall short of many peoples’ expectations. This time may be different, but it will take an educated voting population to explain to politicians exactly what they want done to address the issues. In this lesson, we begin that process by examining problems surrounding health care costs, funding higher education, and preserving social security. Then, students look at how the current presidential candidates are proposing to address these issues, and formulate a short media presentation using Flipgrid (https://info.flipgrid.com/) or some other media presentation tool to endorse one candidate.

Students will learn how misinformation with an image or video is more believable and can lead them to unintentionally share information that is misleading or inaccurate. Use this lesson to introduce students to the nuances of how misinformation spreads around major events, sometimes unintentionally, with a focus on the unintended consequences of sharing even “feel-good” misinformation. Students will learn how to recognize when to fact-check something and some basic fact-checking tools.

"Students will examine primary source photos before and after learning about Native American boarding schools in the U.S. and the long-term effects of such policies. Students will then examine the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the “Definition of Genocide” and “Elements of the Crime” from The United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect. Students will use these resources to determine if the ways in which the United States government treated Indigenous peoples in the creation and implementation of Native American boarding schools upheld or violated children’s rights and if this treatment fits the definition of genocide."
