Ship stability is an important area of naval architecture and design. How a ship behaves at sea, in a variety of conditions, is critical to the safety of the crew and cargo. How can we ensure our ship will float? In this video, you will use a mathematical model for a ship’s center of gravity to determine the stability of the vessel.

Shredded cheese blends are manufactured using a mix of specified cheese varieties. In this task, students will determine amounts of different cheese varieties necessary to produce an order of shredded cheese blend for a distribution order.

Companies that manufacture large products, like those provided by Robinson, must find a balance for each job based on human and machine work hours, materials, and available space. A job will often require the knowledge of a process improvement engineer to assist in determining the most reasonable approach to a job. This video shows how someone on the sales team might work with an engineer so that the company can provide its goods to a customer.

This video takes students through a real world problem solving situation regarding calculating dimensions of dog food patties that are cylindrical in shape. Students are given some, not all, patty measurements the customer requires, along with a manufacturing required measurement dealing with “wet weight” of the beef used in the patty.

How are rolls of toilet paper produced? How many rolls of toilet paper can be made each day? In this video, you will calculate the area of a parent roll of tissue and the area of a roll of toilet paper. Using that information, you can calculate how many rolls of toilet paper can be made each day.

When a customer orders a fire truck from Pierce, they ask for specific equipment they want the truck to be able to carry. When engineers design the truck to the customer’s specifications, they need to be careful that the weight for all that equipment is not too heavy for the axles of the truck.

Axle weights are important for the following reasons. First of all, the suppliers of axles rate the carrying capacity of their axles so they don’t fail and that the brakes attached to the axle are sufficient. The second reason is that the Federal Government requires an OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer like Pierce to specify the rated axle capacities and they cannot be exceeded.

Manufacturers often need to calculate a measure of center to find a value that best represents the amount of production of their manufactured products. This value assists manufacturers in creating a production standard for the materials they are producing. A production standard is a benchmark used for measuring the production of the company. The unit of measurement used in a production standard indicates the normal level of performance for an industrial operation and is expressed as units per hour or units per day.

Companies use the Mean Absolute Deviation to assist in calculating an accurate measure of center with upper and lower thresholds. These thresholds allow manufacturers to consider modern production variations. By using MAD to calculate the thresholds, manufacturers offer a method to take the causes of different fluctuations in their hourly or daily production standards into account. This video and lesson show how companies calculate production standards and how they use measures of center and variation to create those standards.
